Forums - Sony Discussion - Is The Playstation 3 Really Doing That Bad?

i think we are comparing ps2 launch games to ps3 launch games... if so then the ps2 had ssx it sold very well.. tekken tag tournament.. it sold very well.. ace combat 4..in its 1st year... gran turismo in its 1st year... theres no need to continue...  ps3 has hmmmmm lets see resistance... motorstorm and a bunch of ports from the 360...

If you accuse someone of lying, you kinda have to prove them wrong. Not saying that you can't, of course, I'm just not going to go do your research for you. Name a system-seller for the PS2 that came out before holiday season of '01, please?

To be fair, Fish, HappySquirrel did say "Decent" game, not "system selling" game. And yeah, I really don't think you need to do any research to state that the PS2 did, in fact, have several decent games in its first year of existance. Tekken Tag Tournament was a launch title, for goodness sakes :p

Also, the point about the Dreamcast is well taken. The Dreamcast wasn't just lacking support, it was publicly shunned by major companies like EA. That's a big difference.

And HappySquirrel, not trying ot attack you or anything. I also wanted to say that your point in a different thread -- where you showed how much better Nintendo games sell than Sony games, and why that does make the disparity between the number 2 and number 4 sellers quite a big one -- is a point wel taken, and I agree with you now.

I intended to imply "better game than the PS3 has seen so far" but phrased what I said poorly ...

When you look at the year after launch of all three regions the PS2 had sold somewhere between 16 and 20 Million units world wide; at (roughly) the same point in time games like Gran Turismo came out which were the first "really amazing" games that were released for the PS2.

OH I see what the discussion is ...the ps2 sold 20 million before having any decent games...i dont think thats true at all

I may not be a smart man, but I know what a sales graph is.... looks like the PS3 line is following to PS2 line purdy darn close. People just like to exaggerate.

The only problem with aligning launches is the fact that the PS2 launched in Japan 6 months ahead of everyone.

So, the PS3, selling in ALL territories now, is matching up with PS2 selling in ONE region.

Also, Bonafide, you said you doubted the PS2 sold 20 million by holiday 01 in your posts. If you take a look, they shipped 19 million by September of 01 and 28 million by March of 02.

There needs to be a massive, giant red blinking light that says that the PS2 line (And GC, and Xbox) is missing its European numbers.

Here, let's break the PS2/PS3 down into their individual components.

http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=PS2&reg1=America&cons2=PS3&reg2=America&cons3=PS3&reg3=America&align=1

That's America. This is Japan:

http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=PS2&reg1=Japan&cons2=PS3&reg2=Japan&cons3=PS3&reg3=Japan&align=1

And now the European Launches:

http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=PS2&reg1=Total+Other&cons2=PS3&reg2=Total+Other&cons3=PS3&reg3=Total+Other&align=1

As you can see, the PS3 is substantially behind the PS2  in both the American and Japanese markets; the European figures don't even have the PS2 at all, which is why the sales end up looking similar, but they aren't.

More or less I was just showing an oversimplified comparison, like are most of the comparisons on here. Like if you were writing a thesis on this(which would be VERY cool if I was in marketing) you would have to include market trends in the consoles cycle as well as expendable income levels and how they were fluctuating in different regions. Still though, on that graph I don't see an overwhelming surge around week 25 on the PS2, again I EXPECT the system to sell slower, it is double the price. Taking this into account, I don't see the PS3 as (roll the eerie music) DOOOOOMED (throw in some Twilight Zone theme) HAHAHAHA

The Playstation 3 is doing bad, so bad in fact that I can't even really say much more about it because I'm afraid Playstation 3 fans might get too upset and try to get me banned if I did.  Needless to say you're always welcome to the Xbox 360 camp.
