Forums - Sales - Can Wii pass the PSP WW LTD before the end of 2008? Will it?

As the PSP isn't going to just sit where it is right now, we can't be certain. But we DO know that the Wii very possibly can.

I think it will. If not by the end of the calendar year, it will definitely pass it by the end of the financial year.

hey guys, guess what, I looked it up, and even in the weeks of the Brawl and MK launch it didn't outsell the PSP with 296k ww.. so.. of course it can accelerate during this year away from the PSP, escpecially if sales are really supply restricted at the moment, but it certainly isn't sure it will overtake the PSP like so many guys here think..

Bzzt... ok how about this, figure out where the PSP is going to be by January 1, 2009 we know the Wii is going to be in the 43-45 million range.

 

 

@Ajax so when in 2007 did PSP average out through the year 1.5 million units sold through a month?

See if the Wii sales depend very much on supply, and like I said the shipped (LTD) number from Nintendo is going to be between 42 and 44 million. And the indication from PSP sales so far in 2008 suggests to me it will end up about 43 million as long as sales keep their pace.

I personally think you will be correct about the PSP, which will end up about 43 million, while I think Wii supply will not quite be large enough (I am expecting the shipped figure to be announced as just over 43 million, but the sales will be 400-500k short of that)

The answer isn't however a simple "no" because it is going to be very close indeed. (unless PSP has a price drop, in which case I doubt it will end the year on less than 43 million and will likely end with 44 ish.)


 I know it will be a close call , but I couldent stand to just write a maybe . There had to be at least one guy who says NO :P

 

Also , lets dont forget that not only the Wii is getting sales boost from the holiday season , the only difference is that Sony will probably be able to honor preorders during nov/dec , while Nintendo wont . Wii craze will be huge :o

^The fact that Sony can meet demand means nothing if demand stays the same.... The first 21 weeks so far have given the PSP 4.6-4.7 million in sales, the next 21 weeks will likely be a bit lower (perhaps 4.1-4.2 million), then a comparable Christmas period (last 10 weeks) to last year will add just over 4 million and bring it in just short of 43 million.

I am happy that sony are getting owned this gen.

It will make them stand up to the plate and start trying again, kind of like what they are doing now.

But i dont want Nintendo to rule eva.

 I know ... but what I meant is that Nintendo CANT , no matter what thye do this year meet demand ... and IMO that will be the main factor why the Wii wont outsell the PSP this year ...

If PSP WW LTD sales falls below 40 million before the end of 2008 then I think its plausible for the Wii to pass it in total sales. Otherwise, there's always next year where the Wii's number will almost definitely trump the PSP's number.

 How in the world is that even possible . The PSP reaches 35 million in ~ 2-3 weeks , and it will only be able to push 5 more in 5.5 months , in wich a holiday gets in :? 

 

But I agree , the Wii will pass the PSPs sales in early Q1 09 ... pretty impressive that the PSP managed to keep its lead for 2 years in front of the fastest selling console of all , even if it had a 2 year start :)
