The only reason they should ditch it would be in order to market it to people that don't want a PLAYstation underneath their TVs. Lets face it, as a cheap madia centre device the PS3 is probably the best valued, but no one will buy it if they are not interested even a little bit on its gaming side (i.e. the PLAY part of the name)...
For example I have a friend who wanted to buy a media centre PC for the living room to complement his PC in the bedroom, however his g/f did not want a PS3 under any circuimstances because she didn't want him to play any games (whipped you could say?)....
Anyway he ended up buying a £900 Sony media centre PC with all the bells and whistles, but if you're asking me he wasted £600 for the windows interface and a bigger hard drive....
Now if the PS3 had the image of more of a media machine and less of a games machine, many people in the same situation would have selected it for media only....
Id Sony wants to place it as a media hub, the name might need to change....
