Forums - Sony - When should the Playstation brand die off?

The only reason they should ditch it would be in order to market it to people that don't want a PLAYstation underneath their TVs. Lets face it, as a cheap madia centre device the PS3 is probably the best valued, but no one will buy it if they are not interested even a little bit on its gaming side (i.e. the PLAY part of the name)...

For example I have a friend who wanted to buy a media centre PC for the living room to complement his PC in the bedroom, however his g/f did not want a PS3 under any circuimstances because she didn't want him to play any games (whipped you could say?)....
Anyway he ended up buying a £900 Sony media centre PC with all the bells and whistles, but if you're asking me he wasted £600 for the windows interface and a bigger hard drive....
Now if the PS3 had the image of more of a media machine and less of a games machine, many people in the same situation would have selected it for media only....

Id Sony wants to place it as a media hub, the name might need to change....

PSN ID: T_Gears

End of 2009 ltd sales:

Wii = 67-68m

X360 = 38-39m

PS3 = 34-35m

Prediction: The PS3 will surpass the 360 on weekly sales after it drops to $299 on all regular weeks (no big releases).

I think the ps3 has done a pretty good job killing the playstation brand.

PS3 has shown just how powerful the PS Brand really is...

Play Station brand name will never die. Long live Play Station name. PS1,2,3,4,5,etc. All sound cool.

$599 ---- double price of competitors

£425 ---- double price of competitors

the story now is

They wont kill it off, but they deffinately should.

Not trying to start a flamewar, but PS1 and PS2 were consoles well known for lasting a long time, and the Playstation brand received much loving. The PS3 has destroyed most of this, and when the PS3 falls short of the 10 year mark (which it will, lets be honest), all goodwill towards the brand will be gone.

 That's ridiculous. The PS3 was the best selling console at the launch ever and will sell well again in the near future, respectively this year. The PS One and 2 sold more than 220 million together. At this point the PS3 is much more flexible and future proof than the other systems. So I don't think they will stop developing consoles or change the direction. Sony accomplished a turnover of several billion $.

The PlayStation brand will last for a long time and we will even talk with our children/grandchildren about this brand.

Sony made just about $3.5 billion on the PS2 between 2000 and 2006.  If they post another $500+ million loss next quarter, they'll have negated it all completely.
