Forums - Gaming - Are Strategy/RPG's and RTS games hard to get into?

I'm thinking about buying my first ever Strategy/RPG: Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War something like that, its for the PSP and I also want Jeanne D' Arc.

And for PC, I'm thinking about getting Command and Conquer 3: Tiberum Wars and several others.

I really want to get Halo Wars but the RTS genre is scarying me.

Are both of these genres hard to get into, as meaning learning curve wise?

I never played these genres before, so I'm a n00b :P

Depends on which titles you pick up, but yes these can be difficult genres to learn at first.

SRPG-wise I think FF:tactics is a pretty good choice since I don't remember having too much difficulty with that. For God's sake man, don't try Fire Emblem first. That's the first game in a long time that I actually had to play the damn Easy difficulty. Stupid game makes me feel strategically retarded, not that I thought I was Napoleon or anything....I just didn't think I was that dumb at this stuff.

...

lol...I mean when I think of the genre it is "strategy" and sometimes I'm like well its thinking and you have to plan this shouldn't be to hard...But the whole battle system scares me.

Yea, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars and Final Fantasy and it was one more Strategy/RPG, I can't remember but they look awesome to play but I'm trying to get into them.

@Torillian
FF: Tactics is a pretty hard SRPG for a beginner.

I would recommend trying Jeanne d'arc first.
It's cheap and easy. It's one of the best starting point for an SRPG beginner imo.

The RTS games start off easy, but grow to be quite difficult. The only one that is frustratingly difficult for me sometimes is Fire Emblem, because I like having my entire party alive, and that could require a lot of restarting.

Other than that, there is a learning curve, but its usually you sitting down, looking at the screen, thinking of a strategy. Real Time Strategies/RPGs aren't hard to get into, rather hard to get good at. You have to remember the pros and cons of several things in the game.

Fire Emblem is great, FF:Tactics as well. Generally most SRPG's are pretty good.

Whether you like 'em depends on what you expect. If you don't want to die ever, don't play Fire Emblem. If you want to be challenged and don't mind restarting a battle once every while these games can be very rewarding.

If you played games in the good old NES era the difficulty level can't be a problem, if you're used to FPS es you might have to change your definition of enjoying a game.

But I really recommend trying a few.

Well the interest is there, its more of me trying out the genre. After seeing in sigs that people were playing Jeanne D'Arc and I'm hearing Fire Emblem on the Wii is awesome. I might end up picking up the titles.

The only thing is I hate dying, but that is in all games. You learn from your mistakes :)

@Soriku

I thought you liked SRPG's? Oh well, some RPG'er you are :P

@Topic

Also, I will chance my definition of enjoying a game, like I said the interest level for both genres are awesome. And since I'm Halo fan I want to buy Halo Wars. Cause it looks awesome.

Certainly will try them out. I just wanted to hear some more experience on VGChartz members memories on when the started into both genres: RTS and SRPG's...

Most RTSs have tutorials or start off the campaigns real easy and teach you basically what every single button and unit does, so just starting out isn't too bad. The difficulty can ramp up quickly after that though depending on the game and its speed.

That's what I thought...I'm going to buy Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars on the Xbox 360 and then buy Jeanne D' Arc for the PSP and more than likely Fire Emblem for the Wii.

Is there anymore suggestions about this genre other than telling me its difficult genre to get into?

RTS'... Not hard to get into, but hard to get good at...

You have to learn how to react and respond to whatever comes your way in such a manner that it effects you only minimaly. Also, it's important that you muster the skills of using hotkeys... Thus creating a big time-advantage between you and an 'ordinary' player who hasn't taken the time to learn those... Also, learn the tech-tree... Learn in which sequence you have to build to be the fastest on the top of the food-chain. And don't forget! ALWAYS expand your base, ALWAYS search for more resources... If you just build an army and go in defensive mode you may hold for a short amount of time, but you have lost anyway then... It's only a matter of time! Always expand...

EDIT: ecurbj, if you wish to play the game online you'll always have better players then you because they are already familiar with the RTS genre. However, if you buy the game (in this case Halo Wars) at launch then you won't have that big of a disadvantage... Oh, and the game is coming out on X360, only a few gamers have experience with console-RTS's (from LotR:BFME).
