A 2nd Opinion
I’ve worked in a major medical center for 35 years and trust me when I say that ASKING A DOCTOR CAN BE MISLEADING. Why do you think insurance companies will usually ask for a 2nd opinion? There are as many opinions among experts as there are experts and unfortunately many of them will say whatever is required to get publicity. Didn’t anyone watch O.J. Simpson’s trial?
Of course BMI is not the only measurement; there is no such thing. On the other hand it is rather disingenuous of her to pretend that it is not very much used in medicine. I recently joined the program at the Weight Management Center where I work. It is regarded as one of the best programs in the country. Guess what three things they measure in order to plan your program and later to monitor your progress. They measure weight, BMI and basal metabolism. Wii Fit does two of these and I think it’s unreasonable to expect it to do the basal metabolism which requires some fairly sophisticated equipment.
I should think that anyone with more than a room temperature IQ is aware that exercise without dieting is not going to work for losing weight. We burn almost all our calories keeping our body temperature a balmy 98.6 F and exercise doesn’t increase calorie usage all that much. A good hard workout might burn up an apple but it will not burn up the prune Danish you snuck. That said, a program of regular exercise, very much like Wii Fit offers, can boost your metabolism and that can help very much with weight reduction. Primarily it is designed for fitness, not muscle mass or losing gobs of weight.
The charge that people will abandon Wii Fit after a while; Yes Sir, Captain Obvious, a significant number will. An equal or greater number will quit a Weight Management Program, give up a diet and gyms have a business model that expects a majority not to use the facility that they’ve paid for. This is why they are much more interested in selling you a long term contract than they are by charging by the hour.
If there is a fitness program that doesn’t require the will to keep it up I’d like to hear of it. The same goes for weight reduction with the exception of becoming a POW and bariatric surgery. To get the surgery, you have to basically prove that you have tried multiple programs and just don’t have the willpower to lose the weight by dieting. So then they staple your stomach or put on a lap band so you can lose “automatically. And even then, some people show so little resolve that the surgery is a failure because all it can do is keep you from eating a lot at a time. But if you graze all day long you can still gain weight.
This physician undoubtedly knows all these things but she has put a spin on to put down a viable though not perfect fitness alternative.
There is the other side of physicians, especially physical therapist, who have ACTUALLY USED and indorse Wii Fit. My own institution is installing some for that purpose. But you can bet your ass that GameSpy won’t manage to spy any of them since they will not support their predetermined campaign to spread only negative information.
