Forums - Sales - Can Nintendo catch Sony?

I think that it will be about even at the end of this generation. The PS2 still sells a bit. That's what you have to factor into this. The Wii will continue to dominate though.

wow this just reminded me of how much the ps1 and ps2 pwned hard! and how much of a diiapointment the ps3 is saleswise.

Not that far behind them sales-wise at a similar point.

This would mean the Wii would have to outsell the PS3 by almost 50 million Consoles this generation. It will never happen. Even if the Wii were to win this generation, it won't win by more than 25 million, and I still think there is a fair chance that whole thing could be very close when all said and done. Too many of you are misjudging this early jump by nintendo. Nintendo fans were forced to buy early, they have an advantage in price point , and front loaded all their big hits, and yes they opened a new portion of the Market. With this said we do not know where and when these "New gamers" will stop in growth. Some of you guys really make me laugh.

It's like a funny version of the comedy club from GTAIV.

Anyway, your totally wrong, and imo, kidding yourself if you think the PS3 is gonna make a huge comeback because the Wii doesn't have any games. As in, the Wii doesn't sell because of games.

I'm guessing 50 million lead by the time the Wii 2 launches.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

It depends on when PS2 stops selling i guess ...

30 million gap atm.

- Assuming PS2 sales of - 11 million, 6 million, 3 million, 0
or rather 20 million units by 2010 and when SONY ceases production of PS2. This will make the gap 50 million.

- Assuming 25 million Wii's sold 08 and 13 million PS3's = 12 million difference.
Leaving a 38 million gap.
- Assuming 30 million Wii's sold 09 and 15 million PS3's = 15 million defference.
Leaving 23 million gap.
- Assuming 25 million Wii's sold 2010 and 12 mill PS3's = 13 million difference.
Leaving 10 million gap ...
... therefore in 2011 or 2012 Nintendo should catch up to SONY ...

Still SONY has done preety good with 3 consoles v. 5 ...

A better question is why do you think it will Continue to sell at it's current remarkable rate over the years to come? The PS2 did not sell like it did simply because it was the PS2. It sold well because it put out AAA ip's throught it's entire lifespan. What big name IP's are you counting on to carry the Wii over the next few years? or are you counting on people to buy a Wii for games released in 2007 and 8 in 2010,11,12, qnd 13? I can name you ate leadt a dozen AA and triple AAA titles that will release over the next 3 or 4 years for the PS3. How many Wii titles in the same area can you name? GC sold 25 million units last gen, Nintendo stopped supporting GC. What do you think most GC supporters are playing today? thats right Wii. Sony is still supporting PS2. You guys are so seriously jumping the gun it's just laughable.

I agree with this.

To be honest, the games on the Wii are no different than the ones on Gamecube. They have the same IP's, the same old franchises. This is why everyone predicted doom for Nintendo before the generation started.

The only thing that's driving the Wii is the motion controls/Wii Sports. The question is - How long is it going to last?

The Wii is the Gamecube without their new audience, and we don't know how long they'll stick around.

I don't think the PS3 is going to make a huge comeback, but we know it's going to have steady sales until the end of the generation.

Bold: The Wii doesn't sell anymore than the Gamecube because of games. It sells those extra units to a new casual audience, who buy it to play Wii Sports, Wii Fit etc...

You don't honestly think the Wii is successful because of Mario do you?

Sometime during 2009.

You're not talking to me are you, cause all you're doing is repeating the exact point I made in my previous post. Read it again.

Because the PS2 launch was studdered and the PS3 has an extra holiday. The PS3 isn't even close to keeping pace with the PS2, than chart is fanboy rubbish meant to present numbers out of context with the intended result being that "The PS3 will do the same thing as the PS2, look at this chart."  Not gonna happen.
