Would these kinda be like GameSpot's factions?

I mentioned something like this months ago but people said it wouldn't work. I'd like it to have some groups.

I call admin for the KH and ToS groups! :)

You'll be all alone... Lol, just kidding, you really do like Kingdom Hearts don't you?

And you already know my opinion on it.

The minute we start creating exclusive groups and clubs that exclude other members we have bad feeling amongst people. I can't trust "you" (i.e the community) - if I could we wouldn't have the need for moderators, bans and rules. Actually running a site for nearly 3 years shows you what works and what doesn't and leaving people to do what they want does not work I'm afraid.

The reason I have yet to find a solution I am happy with is pretty fundamental - who joins and leaves a particular "group" needs to be controlled in a natural way, not by having to enforce some sort of control or condition on who is allowed to join. Anybody should be free to join any group, just that most people don't want to join most groups. There should be a way of finding and talking to like-minded people without having to physically exclude others because that is where the problems begin.

Don't you think it is a little odd that you head moderator and helper (besides "TheSource") make a public post how to do private clubs (named groups) and you posting than that you basicly don't want them anyway?¿?

It was posted as an idea for discussion in light of recent events.

It's a discussion topic to see how the community would feel about the idea, and any actual implementation would likely differ greatly from the intitial proposal.

Another tidbit:
- For any groups you join, those forums will be displayed on the Forums page at the bottom under the heading "My Groups".

Other possibilities for community enhancements include leveraging the friends lists:
- Ability to send a PM to all of your VGC friends
- Addition of a "private wall" in your profile that can only be seen/posted on by your VGC friends

I actually disagree with ioi on having closed groups, since I feel they can have a place here as long as they do not disrupt the general community in any way, but the point is to have a discussion here since we're open to multiple options if the community feels very strongly one way or the other.

Both ioi and DKII's posts mention expanding the amount of recipients of PM's. I very much like that idea and would like to expand it into something all might be comfortable with.

Step 1: Give us the ability to create "Interests groups," hereafter referred to as IG. An IG can be created by a member who fits a certain criteria (you determine the criteria since people seem to put such important on "post count"). This IG must then be approved by a mod. Once it is approved, it goes into the list of all IGs and since its new it is also showcased in a "recently added IGs" section.

Step 2: The creator of the IG must set up the criteria to join the group, examples include being from a certain location, owning a certain system, owning a certain game, being of a certain age and write up a brief outline of what the groups' purpose is.

Step 3: Users can choose to join the groups. Acceptance can either be instantaneous and automatic, or subject to the approval of the IG's creator.

Step 4: Allow people to search through VGC members using groups as filters and also allow them to sort their friends by interest. Also allow searching for multiple similar interests so you can find people who enjoy for example Dogs and Bob Dylan.

Step 5: Allow members of an IG to quickly and easily send messages to all other members of IG.

This would allow people of similar interests to find and communicate with each other quickly. It does not address the situation of people wanting separate forums though. So my proposed solution to that would be the creation of the option for people to block the posts of users of their choice and/or the option to only show the posts of people who are in your own personal IGs.

I still fail to see the need for an "adults only section" for the discussion of "mature" subject. The off topics discussion forum usually has several actually mature subjects per week, whether they be on immigration/emigration, health care, political or sociological issues. What people seem to equate with "mature discussion" is rarely mature at all, usually involving porn. You obviously do not want to turn people away from your website, but if people want to discuss porn and genital warts, let them find an appropriate forum on a non-gaming site. A gaming site does not NEED such a forum and nothing stops people from being members of other forums cater to their specific need.

In fact, people who desire the not-so mature "mature discussions" can even use my previously proposed IG's to quickly PM themselves links to what they want to see and even URLs to forums where they could discuss their particular "mature" subject.

QUESTION (unrelated to what precedes):
If the concept of user created and managed subgroup is implemented, will content that could be spun off into a subgroup be FORCED to be spun off into a subgroup or could even niche topics (such as the Warhawk League) remain in the general discussion forums?

So maybe it is time to bump this.
Since I now know the "pre" story and thought about it, I changed my mind.
Do it, I want it! I think it is a nice feature and will help overall.

It could also a nice feature for the league bot, since the first complains came that there are to many stickies ;)

Yeah, it would help sort of the leagues, because there could be a group for each league, which will help the admins sort everything aout, and also a place just for the time so that everyone knows what is happening

My 2 cents.... I'm not really a big fan of the groups idea, I get what you're trying to achieve, a place to discuss something like a game or console without having the conversation turn into a flame war, but I don't think groups and especially private groups is the right way to achieve that.

I think groups kinda goes against the idea of a forum. I like the idea that even though I don't own a PS3, I can see what a lot of people who do own one are getting excited about, which may cause me to want to buy one, and I can also add my opinion about games like LBP or MGS4. If someone goes and creates a PS3 group that's invite only, and the requirement for joining that group is owning a PS3, then people like me who are planning to buy one eventually, are going to miss out on a lot of information.

Anyways, to sum up, I think private discussions go against the idea of a forum. If the goal is to have flame free topics, then the mods should start pulling the ban trigger on anything that resembles trolling/flame-bait.
