Forums - Gaming - Classic Franchises That Need to Die and Dead Ones that Need New Life

@mrstickball I totally agree with the combat racing. I would love see a new RnRR or Road Rash. Full Auto didn't do it for me either. And it doesnt seem like to hard of a genre to create a game for so i don't understand why there are not a few decent ones. @starcraftmanaic no need to get so agressive. i just wanted to see if anyone agreed with my ideas and obviously you dont. you can try to keep it civil though. im just suggesting that Square-Enix use some new concepts and stop relying on the FF name. They can some out with some new RPGs and if they are actually good they will continue to sell. Its like the fear that any game they make wont sell, regardless of its quality, if it doesnt have a recongnizable name attached to it. like someone else posted on here 4 FFXIII is getting silly. aswell as the plethora of remakes they are pushing out. Thanks for the Rygar news too by the way. that is good news and apparently i only have to wait probably a year and a half. thanks. @a.l.e.x59 I like your list for seeing if a game is stale. a lot of it makes good sense. i do find that my own opinion doesn't always follow what sales trends do though. Its like pop music and shallow teen movies (comedy/drama). They both sell well even if they are very thin and have no lasting value because of the marketing, celebrities involved etc. i find that even if a game sells pretty well i can easily find it shallow and boring. @vizunary I did put Sonic on my list. you might have just missed it cause its right in the middle i think. And i kind of put mario on my list. i included Mario Sports games (probably should have said mario spinoffs so mario party was included) but i left mario platformers off on purpose. Some one mentioned this in a previous thread recentely but they dont really milk mario platformers. 3 for NES, 2 for SNES (3 if you include mario all-stars), 1 for 64, 1 for GC, 2 for GB, and only 1 scheduled so far for wii. that 10 mario platformers for 23 years of gaming and 6 different platforms. whereas Square had like 6 FF for Psone (if you could the remakes if not 3), 3 for Ps2, and im not sure how many are scheduled as of right now for PS3 but at least one. thats 10 for 13 years of gaming and only 3 consoles. @Entroper i didnt realize Gradius was still around. thanks for the tip. ill check that out for sure. and i totally agree with you for the 3-D fighters. The first one i played was Soul Calibur and they are all pretty much the same game with different characters so i dont really play any other ones. very generic.

Well... I was exagerating there... So... I'll excuse me for that! Even got a mod warning for it

THE NETHERLANDS

Slayer- While I really like your idea, I think you're taking far too broad of an approach. It's REALLY hard to generate good discussion when you list DOZENS of games to be saved or graved. (Too diffused of an argument.) For the sake of ease, and because everybody likes lists, here's my top five in both categories. [WARNING! Heavy sarcasm! I WILL say things that are inflamatory, but there are in JEST!] GRAVED 1. Madden (Not only do I HATE John Madden personally, I really hate the disgusting amounts of sales this title gets from herds of sheeple lining up to pay $50 - $60 for their ROSTER UPDATES) 2. Sonic (Sonic, I never liked you, ever. Yes, I understand that lots of poeple loved and adored you, and that's ok, but now you're pathetic. Now you're little better than Al Gore running around warning everyone about Manbearpig, just to get attention [FTR: I'm a Democrat, and I do believe in Manbearpig, but give it a REST!]) 3. Dead or Alive (Do we really need another Fighting franchise, really? And this game, and its "volleyball" spinoff are disgusting and pathetic reinforcing examples of the idea that most gamers are creepy, middle-aged, virgin males living in their mother's basement) 4. Tom Clancy ANYTHING (Who gives a **** WHO'S name is attached? Did Tom Clancy code this game? Can we play him as a secret character? Are any of his over-written, steaming piles of jargon really worth a videogame adaptation?) 5. Grand Theft Auto (These games are perfect for us Americans - they're just like a huge buffet! Think about it, instead of getting one fantastic, specially prepared dish, you can sample from dozens of lukewarm ones that have been sitting under the heat lamps for hours! These games do many, many things, but none of them well, but just like a buffet, we can't help ourselves and keep gorging on mediocre fare.) SAVED 1. Crystalis (The best RPG on the NES, period. Imagine everything that Zelda did, only better. It had leveling, magic, a huge inventory [for the time], detailed dungeons and overworlds, and a PLOT [you know, something a little more than: "PAY FOR DOOR REPAIR CHARGES!"] Unfortunately, it came out late in the development cycle and was, mostly, overlooked. Plus, it would be great to include the original opening text "October xx, 1997, the END DAY!") 2. Actraiser (This game was a great combo of side-scrolling and simulation, and it had amazing music. Imagine a COMPETENT 3D version with some COMPETENT RTS missions . . .) 3. Battle of Olympus (Boy, was this game frustrating, but it did a pretty good job of the [pre] Super Metroid style of adventuring and opening up new areas with new items and abilities. Plus, it is still THE closest game to capture the true spirit and look of ancient Greek mythology. Kratos who? Try Orpheus, one of the CLASSIC heroes, you meat-headed, EDGY, emo fraud.) 4. Gradius (These games were HARD! I hated every single one of them! Especially the stupid Moai stages! Please make another one. . ." 5. Goldeneye (Is it TOO MUCH to ask to get a decent sequel? Is it? Huh? It's been, what, ten years?)

Need to die: Final Fantasy While it's true that each new entry is independant of the last, if the developers (the people making the games) didn't feel the need to live up to the Final Fantasy name (and by live up, I mean change as little as possible so you don't upset the fanbase), they'd probably come up with some new, exciting ideas that would really help the stagnating genre. Matsuno seemed to do it with XII, in my opinion, but I don't see the XIII developers doing anything that exciting (in fact, they've stated they want to create a more traditional Final Fantasy this time). New Life: The 2d virticle shooter genre. 2d Metroid Those are just the ones I feel very strongly about. To be quite honest, most franchises need to die right now. The most important thing the gaming industry needs right now is new IP's.

D-FENS- Fair enough. I'll put up my top 5 in each category then. "Graved" 1.Mana Series - The many games in this series have done very little at all to evolve the series. I have purchase 2 since Secret of Mana and it was the same game gameplay-wise, graphic-wise, art style-wise, character-wise, and story telling-wise. 2.Tony Hawk's Pro Skater - I own and enjoyed THPS 1-4, THAW1-2, THUG, THP8, and THDJ. With the exception of Downhill Jam these games are getting very repetative. The addition of the story mode in American Wasteland simply did not add any enjoyment to the games (i dont think i'm alone on this one). I'm hoping SKATE can refresh this type of game because Tony Hawk needs some competition to help its experience grow beyond what it acheived around THPS 3. 3.Megaman - Havnt they done enough to him already?!?!?! 4.Sonic - While I still thoroughly sonic 1-4 and found Sonic Rush to be a great addition to the series i think sonic was not destined for a 3-D enviroment. What was great about the old ones was the speed and simplicity that came with linear side-scrolling level designs. People expect 3-D enviroments to be more explorable and less linear which i think does not translate well for the blue hedgehog. Maybe he still has a place on handhelds though, who knows. 5.Final Fantasy series - Again I own FFI-FFXI and even X-2. up to about IX i completely loved (8 was questionable). Square is just flooding the market with the FF name right now normally i wouldnt object but i've found the games becoming more and more generic with each release since IX. Square-Enix needs to develop some new IPs in my opinion. "Saved" 1.Rock n' Roll Racers - I havnt played a good car destruction game since Twisted Metal 2 and I havnt played a good car destruction racing game since RnRR. It seems like an easy enough genre to make a decent game for so i dont understand why there arnt any (Full Auto and Vigilante 8 didnt do it for me). A few different vehicles to choose from (Car, Truck, Hovercraft etc.), unrealistic courses and characters, a sweet rock soundtrack and your set. It doesnt have to be to deep, its more just a pick up and play whenever. 2.Act Raiser - I think with the Wii or DS cababilities of having a pointer could be huge for this game. The RTS mode would be a lot more refined than it was back in the SNES days. I think this one has a good chance of being resurrected. 3.Bubble Bobble/Snow Bros - I want more fun Co-op games i can play with less skilled players. Most of the people i have around to game with arnt matched in skill so direct competition is no fun for either of us and the Co-op games that i do have to play are usually long and time consuming (not their style either). These type of games encourage multiplayer fun regardless of skill level and have remarkable replayability. 4.Comic Zone - Standard beat-em-up controls with amazing level design. Simple and engrossing. Very easy to learn how to play but very challenging to finish completely. The amount of freedom you had to choose a path was great, even if you had to keep looking for secrets the whole time. 5.Hybrid Heaven - Stealth, Role Playing and Strategy all rolled into one. If they cleaned up the story and dialouge I think this could be a top title. The battle system was incredible. you could choose which body part to try and render useless for your opponent (ex. you could break and arm or leg to hinder them for the rest of the battle). Massive variety of moves to learn and most of them stayed useful right up to the end. Hope thats better for you D-FENS.

I agree with a few of his opinions. Final Fantasy needs to either go away for awhile or take a new approach. The games are getting pretty stale IMO at this point and I'm obviously not the only one. Sales have been in a near steady decline since VII. Hopefully XIII will turn things around but I'm not holding my breath. Halo needs a new approach after H3 is released. Bungie promised the end of the Master Chief story and I'd like to see them kill the FPS gameplay at least for awhile. Come at us with something a little different. Halo Wars has the potential to do this. Mario Party needs to die a horrible, bloody death. It's done. Give it up for a few years, Nintendo and come back with something fresh. RE5 turning back to the Umbrella Corp story makes me want to scream. You had a much cooler story (and zombies) in RE4, Capcom. Why are you doing this to me? Bionic Commando needs to return, like yesterday. A 2D platformer on PSP or DS. Make it happen. Kid Icarus would be an interesting update. I'd like to see them try it. Prince of Persia, though relatively new to returning to shelves, is already getting annoying. Please stop releasing games every 4 months, you bastards. Way to drive a surging franchise into the ground. Metroid. A lot of you will bash me for this but Metroid was never meant to be an FPS. While I've played the games and they're decent, they will always be bastardizations of the original and Super Metroid. I'd like to see Nintendo try a drastically different approach to this series though I'll give MP3 the benefit of the doubt. This was all I could come up with off the top of my head.

Well, I'm not going to say that you don't have a right to the opinion that Metroid is bad as an FPS, but I also have the right to my opinion that you are certifiable. After the Prime series I have no desire to ever play Metroid in 2D again. It was just a generic 2D sidescrolling shooter until Prime turned it into something truly unique and amazing.

It's true that the transition to 3D often doesn't work out well (IMO Final Fantasy was never the same after VI), but Metroid is about as close to perfect in 3D as any game has ever been.

saying FF should be left alone kinda pissed me off. The series just started moving in a new direction and you want it gone. the same w/ RE. and God of War has only just begun and I enjoyed the 2nd better than the 1st. argh... Chrono Trigger should be revived and that is all I can think of right now.
Yeah, the RE4 thing pissed me off too. I mean, when a franchise has the same gameplay people say it's becoming stale, and when they change the way you play people say that they don't feel like playing a game of the same series. Annoying...

thats it, the reason for little new franchises, the people still love his old franchises. For example i want 20 or 50 resident evil games yeah :).

You know, a 3D Sonic game is not hard to make. I can visualise a good one. Why are the developers jerking around to the franchise? WTF?

im just suggesting that Square-Enix use some new concepts and stop relying on the FF name.

I agree with this. I don't know how people can say the main FF series is getting stale, though. FF is a shining example of how a franchise can be reborn over and over with changes large enough to keep it fresh, but small enough to keep it in the same vein. FFXII was the best entry in the main series since VII, and it certainly proves that the franchise isn't stagnating (the most common complaint was that it was too different, so I really don't know where this is coming from...).

Stuff I'd like to see revived:
-Twisted Metal
-Populous (I loved the third one, though I understand it wasn't a fan favorite)
-Brave Fencer Musashi (the PSX one was crazy awesome. The PS2 one not so much)
-Dungeon Keeper (I never actually played these games, but I heard a lot of good things)
