I wanted you to know a few things before you insult someone else who is a bit older than you.I do understand things like video resolution quite well. I have been in the field of image analysis and processing since the first PC and I routinely perform highly advanced techniques like 5 dimensional microscopy. I personal own a D300 and a D3.I often lecture and serve as a Beta tester for imaging software and hardware. I have to understand resolution because I print digital images on a 44” wide printer. I’ve been playing computer games since Zork, video games since Pong. It’s not that I can’t master the controls as much as I hate them. Somehow fighting Nazi with a keyboard and a mouse, is to me tedious, a bit silly and very passive.
The handpad type of controller is not the God-given final solution. It is a mostly analog kludge that reflected the state of the art in the RS232 era. I do not feel the Wiimote is the final answer either but I think it is the next generation in an evolutionary process. These are my opinions and your mileage may differ but just because you are young, brilliant and full of testosterone, don’t assume that the way you and your generation do things is the only or best way. At one time a one button joystick was considered the end all and be all of gaming. I’m glad we’re not still using it. And if you don’t think that the complexity of control is making games inaccessible to a lot of people; new gamers, ex-gamers and people who want a more casual experience, I think you are very mistaken and that is why you don’t understand the Wii’s popularity, along with a lot of the industry.
But please don’t ever quote Michael Pachter to me as the final word. He is rightfully considered an idiot by a by many in the industry and a least one executive claimed that doing the opposite of his recommendations was the best way to use him. He does not understand new innovations and I offer the following as proof.
Pachter on the DS: “I can’t understand why two screens are required rather than a split screen.” He went on to say, “Everyone will produce at least one game on the DS in order to learn the mechanics, but if it launches with 12 games, it will look a lot like the N-Gage.” (The DS would launch with six.) "I think that PSP will be a category killer with older gamers.
Indeed, the lackluster specter of Nokia's poorly received game deck is already hanging over the DS. Doubts about its very concept are rampant. "I can't understand why two screens are required rather than a split screen. If the device is a GBA SP with two screens, I don't think it will command much of a premium."
After skyrocketing sales proved him wrong he made the following admission of his confusion: It shocked me, when [the NPD] said the numbers. I was shocked at what the sell-through was two months in a row. ... But I just... I don't know. I mean I was shocked that it sold essentially a million units in two months. So, that alone is responsible for my increase in forecasts on the DS,” (8)Some analyst: It’s selling very well so I’ll change my prediction to it will sell very well. Thank you Capt. Obvious.
Pachter on Online Gaming:“I don't think there are four million people in the world who really want to play online games every month. World of Warcraft is such an exception. I frankly think it's the buzz factor, and eventually it will come back to the mean, maybe a million subscribers. It may continue to grow in China but not in Europe or the U.S. We don't need the imaginary outlet to feel a sense of accomplishment here. It just doesn't work in the U.S. It just doesn't make any sense."
I could go on but in brief this visionary just ups his evaluation of the Wii’s potential for success in response to it already happening. Thanks again Capt Obvious. So somehow I think I will look for my advice from somewhere other than Wedbush Morgan Securities. As Far as bubble popping, just keep believing and move the event to the next big release or price cut or alignment of the stars. Forbes wrote a huge article, and many, including in this forum, confidently proclaimed that GTA IV would destroy the Wii yet in the face of record game sales, the Wii was setting world record console sales. GTA IV had no more effect than Halo3 but hey maybe next season, oops I mean next big release.
Someone here Said “if it’s not about GTA IV what is it about?” Who wouldn’t want GTA IV? How about the young who won’t be able to get it, most females, those that just find its content offensive, and a lot of people old enough to have gotten the adolescent fascination with violence out of their system. As part of my work, I have also had to photograph numerous autopsies and crime scenes and I can assure you that I don’t find mayhem at all amusing. So debate away, express your opinions, cling to whatever hopes you want to but try not to hold people in contempt because they are older than you. Odds are you’ll be here someday too.
