Forums - Gaming - What are some of the games with the best writing?

@Euphoria, I LOVED the Xenosaga series (maybe not 2 so much), but I'm not sure if I could consider the "Writing" all that good, the voice work was spot on, and the cinematography of it all fit in really nice :P But like Metal Gear I'm not sure if I can contribute that to the writing...

From 0 to KICKASS in .stupid seconds.

Starcraft for how well the Overmind was written it really did make you feel like a part of the Swarm

The Monkey Island games were also well written.

Definately, witty and simple, pure unobtrusive humor! Banjo Duel FTW!!

Knowing your view on 10/10 is why I felt the need to classify it. I just hope they stick to more exploration, and more waterfalls so that I can just stand there are watch the beautiful water, and then marvel at only the bits of him that went in the water were wet, the graphics were just that good

I would also second(or third) the GTA IV radio stations, and much of the internet is hilarious (I love the travel advice)

If they would have kept it to exploration, the game would have definitely been better. We can absolutely agree on that. Take advantage of that engine they created and make the environments jaw-dropping.

I was the one who brought up the GTA commercials but I specified GTA III. I think that was the only one that had biting enough satire and it played up the early Internet days wonderfully. Every GTA game since then has been an exercise in recycling ideas IMO.

It is the same style of humour, but it is still funny. the radio is just a background distraction while you are playing the game. I also like the Ricky Gervais stand up show, and his talk on radio, though Gervais probably had a lot of input there

Here are some of my favorite well-written gems in the sea of bullshit known as "game writing."

Beyond Good and Evil
Day of the Tentacle
Final Fantasy 6
Half-Life
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Portal
StarCraft

Man, it's hard to think of any at all.

Kinda scary when you think about it, isn't it?

If we're going purely by GAME writing standards, Bioware usually has their moments of near-brilliancy in most of their games, particularly in their pre-console days. Not exactly Pulitzer Prize stuff, and often a little overwrought, but for the most part, pretty good. Believe it or not, The World Ends With You also has some pretty sharp dialogue; not something I was expecting out of it at all.

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

GTA SA...radio stations..

HS only for Bohan..

FF6..TRULY EPIC feel

MGS series as whole..AWESOME!!

I'm content so long as Uwe Boll doesn't start making games. Or George Romero for that matter...

I recall Icewind Dale having pretty decent writing/narration but it's been a long time since I played it. Not as character-centric as Baldur's Gate, but very story-centric.

Indeed, ID 2 was even better in this regard, and Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer has a profoundly good story and writing (can't go wrong with Forgotten Realms anyways... ).

I never finished IWD2. The feeling just wasn't there.

I'll take Eberron over FR. In FR, the world is on the verge of ending every day and there's an archmage behind every bush despite most of the world apparently getting along without magic. In Eberron, things make a little more sense. Not much... but a little. That's probably a different topic though...

Untrue, untrue!  FR ftw.  What a diverse world with so much going on.  No manmade world has had more content generated for it.  I love it.  Anyway, yeah it's all opinion.

As for game storylines?:

Planescape : Torment

Metal Gear series

FFVI

ChronoTrigger

I'll beat it to the punch: Bioshock is OK, nothing spectacular, the atmosphere is really where the game shines I think.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )
