For rounding purposes, it's fair to claim a 100k gap. Margin of error permits it as well.   Though like Fishy siad, Golden Week didn't give much boost this year it seems.

Um, this was pretty much the tone on these very forums, and everyone who believed that Sony could make a comeback was a rabbid, blind fanboy. You do your sig shame on this day.

Sony making a comback relative to MS was always plausable, because MS was never doing all that well with the 360.

The big issue that Sony fans had been pushing was that the Wii was about to fall off in sales once everyone realized it wasn't an HD console and, of course, no one wants things that aren't HD.  And, of course, Sony sales would increase so dramatically with X title release, which never happened, or with "all of these upcoming 2007 releases I've listed here", many of which haven't yet happened.

The PS3 may struggle to get out of dead last in this console war, but I personally think they have a reasonably good chance to do so.

So the ps360 will remain linked for the remainder of this generation.

of course. And this is a good thing for both Ps3 and 360. So developers will target them and not the Wii. But this doesn't change the fact that one of the two can be much more successful, but in this case hardware features are important.

Did you read NJ5's thread about how the 360 and PS3 have basically tied, and how this was the final result for the generation?  Looking at the number's, it's a very compelling read.  It's very likely that the 360 and PS3 will have a smaller gap, percentage wise, over the next three years than they do right now.  If the PS3 manages to gain more momentum and pass the 360, the gap will continue to shrink for probably another 18 months before it is closed, then it will widen slowly (in the PS3's favor).  There may be another 6.5 million unit cap in the future, but 40 vs 46.5 million, for example, isn't a very big gap at all.

clearly the price cut couldn't help x360 becoming #1 HD console in EU..but on the other side: 1)even with 100k difference per week (which won't be the standard I suppose in the following months) it would take 60 weeks for the ps3 to close the gap WW....and, thus even in this "worst-case-scenario" (100k+ per week), we can suppose that PS3 won't surpass X360 before 30M milestone.
2)it helped x360 improve sales on year to year basis...so we can argue that PS3 will win the "HD console war" (for the "next gen war" Wii is a much tougher "enemy") but X360 is far from being dead.
3)PS3 is more successful than x360...but is not PS2 and won't dwarf competition -> 3rd party developers won't give exclusives to ps3 the way they used to do in past generation....in a way we can still say that MS succeded in gaining some more "respect" in the gaming industry.

1. might be true might not be all they need is ff13 in japan.

2. no one thinks the 360 is dead.. its just not going as fast as ps3 which is bad because of the price... once sony lowers its really not gonna be any room for 360 to lower more.

3. people seem to think microsoft is killing sony in market share when thats really not the case. the only one that will get exclusive games is the wii. all those HD games will not go to 360 alone. it will go to both ps3 and 360. nintendo stole all the market share fom ps2 not 360. people are 4getting that. Only respect microsoft has gained was that it needed a head start to get 1st and second year exculsives... after this year most will go to wii.

@noobie

thats not the point

Ps3 doesn;t have an IMAGE IN JAPAN...

FF gives the console an Image..

like say Pokemon gives ninty handhelds or Mario gives Wii or even GT gives PS3 in EU

in JAP PS3 has NO IMAGE right now...FF13 will give it one..

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Bah that are conclusions that have been pulled out of a dark place. The gap seems to be growing. The 360 had two advantages price and games. Games will be a wash soon and price will get smaller (in absolute terms) when both get cheaper.

The PS3 is a BluRay player has the brand, better quality and IMO some serious design advantages. So my consclusion (that has been likewise pulled out of my mind) is that the gap will get bigger. And we will see who is right.

yeah as far as hardware goes i dont think its going to win, the ps3 has a strong hold in others. but as far as software is concerned thats a different story, the 360 sells a huge amount of software and thats just as importanat as hardware sales.

 1. ok...but ff13 isn't expcted this year...so 60 weeks is still "worst-case-scenario" for x360 IMO

2. actually a lot of people are stating that x360 is dead...to me it's still "alive and kickin". I think that x360 has reached a new "plateau": not as high as PS3, but, still, higher than last year (positive trend for 3 years in a row)

3.i've never said that MS was going to kill Sony's marketshare...but, you'll agree, MS has managed to create a platform that's gonna rival with PS3 much more than expected while earning some money in the meantime...that's surely better than past generation (almost no competition and huge losses) . If to this picture we add that x360 has gained a status of "remunerative platform" (can't be denied) for 3rd party developers i think that x360's future is afterall still bright.
