Forums - Sales - How Pro Evolution Soccer might be the Wii's big weapon in Europe.

oh now it's all of sudden 'anti football on the wii guys', while it was all about whether all those million football gamers would switch to the Wii or not, which I don't see happening.. and it's also important that GTA, Gran Turismo, MGS and Pro Evo fit much better than Zelda, SSBM, Super Mario and Pro Evo, but that's the guys I know, I don't know how that is with your mates and other gamers in other countries, but that's the way it is here where I am..

It was not a slam against you. It only said 'anti football on the wii guys' because of the way several posters comments read.

'It's always been a PS game, it'll always be a PS game' 'Wii only scored good because GC didn't have a version' 'if i wanted to strap a wiimote to my leg'  comments come to mind.

You personally said on a positive note "all hail Konami" right after you said  it only scored as well was because it got a fresh start since it had no previous year Nintendo version.

Note the only thing said by the people about the PS3 & 360 versions was that they had last gen controls. Which is true, and not said in a negative way.

It doesn't suprise me your mates all feel like you do, you probably play Fifa against them on a PS3. And you've probably played with them for a long time, and like the controls as they feel at home to you.

But sales show people are buying the Wii version, and they like it. Even though it came out late and is graphically underpowered. Why? And can it grow in '09 and beyond? What happens with simultanious release next year? All we are saying is it had a good start and we expect it to build well next year and beyond. Can it dominate on the Wii? Some said the Wii could never dominate.

Always has been doesn't make always will be (Final Fantasy was always on Nintendo once upon a time).

yes but I trust my friends much more than these online reviewers of which I don't even know whether they really like football or not or are hardcore Pro Evo friends like guys I know..

So, you think the PS2 version is the best version because your friends think it's the best?

lol, i thought the same thing.

I personally think that Stof is damn right about pro being a big weapon in europe! virtually every single male that i know owns a form of pro evo. (when i was in 1st year daily pro tournaments were a must.)

There are things that will have to be changed  in the Wii version before people will accept it as the definitive version though.

Pro on the non wii platforms has more intricacy on the individual, which on every person who i have introduced to the wii has made a comment on. The problem lies with the defence, free kick taking and shooting although aside from that most of my friends thought being able to tell players to make a run was amazing.

Also master league should be included.

As for people saying about 4 player Pro..... out of ALL of the people that i know play pro evo NOBODY likes 4 player infact nobody even gives a sh!t about it. 4 player takes away from the competition, why play four player when you can seed a cup game?!?!?

Also football fans graphics whores????? since when! has anyone seen the graphics of the HD versions? Football fans only care about playability.

Also @ Ajax I think you will find the type of people that like (Pro+gran turismo) , GTA and MGS are all completely different types of people.

Endure. In enduring, grow strong.

I just don't see the demographic who purchase Pro Evolution Soccer being as interested in the Wii as say the PS3 or 360.

There are also a few disadvantages to the Wii.

1. It doesn't support 4 players. (The importance of this cannot be overstated.)

2. It has a new control scheme. To the semi casuals who have played football games for the past 10 years on a dualshock controller or the past 6 years on a Xbox controller, are better reviews really going to be enough to entice them to change platform?

A large section of the Pro Evolution fanbase have already purchased a next gen console, at this late stage it's my belief that the Wii can only hope to rope in gamers still using their PS2.

3. If internet forums are anything to go by, Graphics do seem to be an issue for football gamers.

In my personal experience as a European, I could definetly see Pro Evo sales for the Wii increasing (PS2 gamers upgrade to a Wii, people watching reviews closely change platform for the next installment) but as for it becoming the standard console for football gaming?

Not a chance.

1. Wanna make a bet that 2009 supports 4 players?

2. That's WHY it's great! It is the "evolution" of footie and perhaps football controls. Sure some will cling to the past, some always do.

3. Internet forums are only a small percentage of gamers. And you said most footie player were casual, you think they scour the net to check graphics vs gameplay forums? I'm sure casual gamers do just that....

Not a chance? You sound like every analyst that said in October of '06 that the Wii would never account for more than 15% of the gaming market.

I'm sure the 09' version will be better than the 08 version, and may of course support up to 4 players. I was disussing the differences between the current versions.

You are arguing that the Wii version will become the best selling version in Europe.

Lets take a look at what it needs to do to acheive that feat.

Breakdown of current Pro Evolution Soccer 08' percentage sales in the EU:

Overall: 4.77 million

PS2: 49%

PS3: 26%

360: 19%

Wii: 6%

Things worth noting: 1. Wii sales of Pro Evolution could double by the end of the games lifetime 2. Despite having the lowest EU install base of current generation consoles the PS3 version of Pro Evolution soccer 08' sold the most.

Indicating the continuing trend of strong PES sales on Playstation consoles.

In order for the Wii to be in with a chance of outselling the PS3 version PES 09' it must double (at the very least) the sales of it's predessecor, while the PS3 version must not see an increase in Pro Evolution sales over the previous year.

As for the PS2 version, the Wii must increase it's sales by 8x that of it's predeccesor to be in with a chance of outselling it.

So realistically speaking unless the Wii radically expands the Pro Evolution market, and starts roping in new gamers, it will have to start taking huge amounts of sales from the other consoles.

It's also worth noting that the Wii version, although launched late, did have the advantage of a strong advertising campaign in the EU. While in comparison the PS3 and 360 versions recieved little to no advertising- perhaps because it was almost a given that they would sell well.

of course it's a great move by Konami, whether you prefer the Wii version or not, and I don't think i said it ''only'' scored as well because etc. I said that you should also look at the context in which a game is released.

It doesn't suprise me your mates all feel like you do, you probably play Fifa against them on a PS3. And you've probably played with them for a long time, and like the controls as they feel at home to you.

well actually the whole topic I've talked about Pro Evo and even our ''Pro Evo pub'', so I don't see why you come up with Fifa now, anyway, I also made clear that I'm no football-gamer myself, when I said:

i'm not a computer football fan myself, I rather play it for real on some real grass, but some friends of mine seriously play it hours and hours and hours in a row, and we have regulary tournaments in town.. I only go with them for the beer when they play :P

I play some matches, but you can't consider me a fan.

of course, the install base of the Wii is getting bigger and bigger rapidly, sure it will sell, and I also expected it to have good legs, but I say, that the sales don't come from many Pro Evo fans, longtime Pro Evo gamers, the hardcore or whatever you wanna call them. So i said:

some friends of mine play Pro Evo for some serious money over here, tournaments and stuff, and I still don't see them switching over to the Wii and it's mechanics.

nontheless it will sell of course, with already almost 9 mill Wii's in Europe, next year the install base will be significantly higher, so it not selling it would actually be strange.

Always has been doesn't make always will be (Final Fantasy was always on Nintendo once upon a time).

strange comparison, cause there was only one FFVII on one console so you had to play it on the PSX, in the case of Pro Evo or Fifa you can chose on which platform you want to play it, so you aren't forced to switch

anyway, I understand what you mean of course, and the Wii PES getting an attach rate like the PS3 version is not impossible, but I think the percentage amongst the Wii Pro Evo gamers of gamers new to the series will significantly be higher than the case will be with the PS3 version.

So, you think the PS2 version is the best version because your friends think it's the best?

no not my friends, but veteran Pro Evo players, who also are my friends, but that's secundary, but I actually should ask em about it again though, they might be playing the PS3 version more now (or the Wii version lol)
but who do you trust, guys who play years tournaments for a couple of hundred euro's or some IGN or Gamespot guy?

anywaaayyyyyyy, Konami is doing a good job, and will probably do better and it has potential, but still I say, it won't be people switching to the Wii version, but rather most buyers will be relatively new to the series..

damn what a long post, I wonder if you will even bother reading it lol

''Hadouken!''

The way the attacking controls works is perfect. But defending is so frustrating that after playing the game for about 3 days I couldn't go back to playing it and probably never will. If they can sort out the defensive controls for the next version it will do very well.

Actually... the guys from IGN and gamespot.

People who have been playing Pro Evo for 8+ years are going to biased towards the PS2/PS3 control scheme because they are used to it.

A great number of people who have only played console FPS think Dual Analog is better then Mouse and Keyboard when any impartial observer will tell you that Mouse and keypad will destroy dual analog.

To them, even when they try it out, mouse and keyboard seems infeiror because they aren't used to a new control style.

Hell it happens in sports games in the US ALL THE TIME. People with the Xbox version who are used to Xbox controls would always want to play that, people with PS2s always wanted to play the PS2 version, each saying the other was worse, and using a slightly different controller to explain away their sucking.  This is going to be even more prounced when the changes are drastic.

The difference here is that all the Wii version does is add in ways to make passing more accurate. How could anyone say that's bad and be unbiased?

I'm a huge hardcore PES gamer. I tried the Wii version, but i just couldn't get into it. The game itself is something different: it plays more like a RTS, which i really didn't like. The gameplay wasn't fast as the 360/PS3 versions, but it was still fun. To some it may be an evolution, but I prefer a regular standard controller. I'm glad PES is selling well, since its the best Football series.

let me say this
I normally get football games ( yes I don't play soccer you americans should use american football) on the pc.
But I so bought pro evo wii and love it.
