Forums - Nintendo - What engine did SMG used? Why don't Nintendo use it in SSBB & MK Wii?

The name of an engine is just a superfluous title that some developers choose to attach to their engines. It doesn't mean anything.

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

Like others have said, it's an unnamed proprietary engine that hasn't been used in any other games. We may as well call it the 'Mario Galaxy Engine'. That said, Miyamoto said that since they already had the engine, they'd be able to make another Mario platformer in a much shorter period of time. So it'll be used in at least one other game.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Nintendo creates specific engines for each of their top tier games, in order to optimize the performance of that game.

For example the Galaxy engine was mostly built around dealing with the gravity of the spheres.

The benfit is clearly that you don't have to put in stuff you don't use, so the power of the console can be fully used for the processes that matter.
Of course this is much more expensive.

Yup, you nailed it...  Nintendo has stated in the past that each of their games gets a unique engine.  They rarely ever re-use an old engine.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

I don't think nintendo names their engines. Even if they did, you won't find it in any game not made by nintendo.

Nintendo often builds games from concept upword. This is good for content but takes more time and money, bt a better polished game instead of adapting to a known engine.

Thank you sc94597 for that link, I can't believe that someone has finally figured it out. I'm no casual gamer, I love games and I have spent a lot of time playing them. Hundreds of hours online playing COD for example but I wasn't getting the experience I wanted. I loved the realistic graphics (higher than HD) and with an interest in WW2, I actually appreciated the history. So what was the problem? 1. TIME - The game was taking too much time that I didn't have. I really wanted something I could pick up for twenty minutes at a time not hours.
2. FRUSTRATION - I sucked! I tried very hard; I even bought a Belkin hand controller and I still sucked. I'm over 60 years old and I don't have the reflexes I did when I was a PacMan wonder. No matter how hard I tried, I was going to get killed by the first fast draw teenager I met.
3. CONTOLLER HELL - maybe it's my age or maybe I'm a klutz but they kept adding buttons and it was like playing the damn piano - it required hours and hours of practice that I didn't have time for, or desire for. And, I'm sorry, I'm a very good driver but shoot me - I never learned to drive with my fricking thumbs. It may offer "precise control" but it is certainly non-intuitive and unnatural.
So I bought a Wii. I can pick up Karts and run around a course or two and then go right back to work and yes I LIKE the wheel because that's the hell way I learned to drive and I don't want to start over with my thumbs. I like playing tennis by swinging my arms, and bowling by .... bowling. I'm having too much fun to worry about 480p vs 780i vs who-gives a damn anyway. If I'm am completely honest, Medal of Honor with a Zapper is a lot more fun than I ever had with COD. Not as realistic certainly, but fun. And Blazing Angels will never get game of the year, but it's the first flying game that I can actually fly as opposed to constantly crashing. And I love playing Smash Brothers with my grandson and once in a while beating him. And I love that my wife will join in, even though she hasn't played since the Atari 2600.Does that make me casual, a retard gamer. I don't think so. I love the experience but I don’t want to make it my life's work. But I do have money and I will buy the good games. Two copies usually so I can send one to my grandson.

So thank you Nintendo for taking care of an old retarded casual gamer; and thank you Maelstrom for actually understanding it all.

The Soap Box is now free.

Not to mention Nintendo didn't make Brawl, remember?

The heavy lifting in Smash Bros. is mostly done by HAL Laboratory.  HAL only makes games for Nintendo products (2nd party).  Also, you might be interested to know that HAL's former president is somewhat important to Nintendo.  He's a nice fellow by the name of Satoru Iwata.

You may be right that Nintendo didn't make Brawl, but that statement would not be too far away from reality.

Nintendo didn't make Brawl, but really, who wouldn't consider Brawl a 'Nintendo' game?
