The heavy lifting in Smash Bros. is mostly done by HAL Laboratory. HAL only makes games for Nintendo products (2nd party). Also, you might be interested to know that HAL's former president is somewhat important to Nintendo. He's a nice fellow by the name of Satoru Iwata.
You may be right that Nintendo didn't make Brawl, but that statement would not be too far away from reality.
