Forums - Sales - Sony reports 238K PS3 install base down under

Wouldn't Sony be quoting SHIPPED figures, as usual? This would then definitely include shipped "free" units, such as the ones they are talking about.

The "hardcore" gamers here buy everything. Several of my friends have all three consoles - nothing else to do with their money!

Its still very expensive here as well, so I guess that bodes well for Sony. My days of spending $700AU on a console are well and truly over.

None of the manufacturers ever quote shipped numbers for Australia, they always quote GfK numbers. Last time, however, Sony also noted that they had sold another 28k bundled with Bravias not tracked by GfK. I'm thinking from now on Sony will be adding these to the GfK numbers.

I'm pretty sure it's just a badly worded article when it says:

The 238,000 figure means the PS3 has easily eclipsed the first-year sales total for the PlayStation 2, which clocked in 146,000 in sales for in its first 12 months.

Note that this isn't a quote from Sony, it's the author's words.

We already knew PS3 had outsold PS2 first year by the end of 2007 as GfK had PS3 on 155k. Also, they always want to give the highest figure possible, if Sony wanted to announce how many PS3 had sold through March they would have announced it immediately. You can assume the numbers being announced now are the most recently available, probably through last week.

238k is too low a number to be shipped. When adding the Bravia bundles to GfK numbers it's about what it would be expected to be by now. Hopefully we'll get Q1 results soon.

^that makes sense, it was the 12 month thing that made it seem like the end of March, but that was just the authors fault.

which means as of now (well last week ended) there have been 210,000 PS3s sold according to GfK, and 213,682 according to VGC, so you can stop bitching Auron.

It is rather odd that the guy compared that figure (which is the PS3 after 13 months) to the PS2 figure of only 12 months, particularly as PS2 was just entering it's Christmas period then and so at 13 months was actually ahead of the PS3 in sales.

of course that doesn't include the free PS3s, so there are more PS3 owners in the same time frame, just not to the extent that this article claims (238:225 instead of 238:146)

"Sales discussion" doesn't have to mean "how this fact relates to VGC numbers."  It just means generally sales-related stuff.  Right?

But if there is discrepency then i think vgchart moderator never have trouble correcting it... and that is the thing i like abt this site... they always trying to keep their numbers as accurate as possible... and i m sure you do realise they donot have gr8 contacts everywhere... so some of the local companies do have better coverage and better numbers...

It looks like Sony will be adding them from now on. The final amount for the bravia bundle was 33k, which meant 205k tracked by GfK through April, and 50k sold through the first 4 months of 2008.

GS AU: How successful has Sony's BRAVIA promotion--where you've given away a free PS3 with the purchase of new screens--been to date?

ME: Very, I think publicly everyone knows about the promotion with BRAVIA, Sony went on to sell 33,000 BRAVIAs with a free PS3 and took something like 70 percent market share in the month of January for high-definition TVs. I think what's it's saying is that consumers who are looking for a high-definition solution for their home are understanding the benefits of a PS3 connected to a high-definition panel. So we are definitely exploring more of those promotions. Mobile phone promotions; we've always done those historically and now it's starting to pick up momentum, because PS3 is a product that people do attach a higher value than just what the recommended retail price is. As I said it really enhances their high-definition experience in the home. There are plans, nothing I can talk about right now, but those 33,000 by the way, those PS3s weren't even included in [Australian games retail tracker] GFK figures, so we'll have to have an asterisks for all the promotional take-ups because they're starting to make up a reasonable quantity of PS3s going into homes.

No, unless you consider 238k greater than 365k.

Corretion 360 has sold only 306k in Australia. So only 68 k behind. PS3 is on 238k. PS3 outsells 360 every week. By end of the year PS3 will be in front of 360 in Australia.

360: 320k through March 2008 (GfK)
PS3: 238k through April 2008 (GfK + Bravia)
