Forums - Sales - MS: 360 version of GTA4 outselling PS3 version 2-1

"What we've heard anecdotally from our retail partners is that the Xbox 360 version of the game is outselling the PS3 version by a margin of two-to-one,"

Sony can almost certainly say the same thing -- that the PS3 version is outselling the Xbox 360 by 2-to-1 because they've heard that from some of their partners.  And it could be true too.

Already today their has been a lot of anecdotal evidence given by both Sony and Microsoft, but I think whats more important is how ioi will go accounting for the massive anomaly this week and next week will be with regards to sales of all three consoles.

I hope he gets it pretty much spot on. Given there has already been a VGC press release about first day GTAIV sales, ioi must be pretty confident.

Yeah, no evidence I have seen supports this, not even the U.S.A. data, where I thought that MS would mop the floor with Sony.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

I remember around thanksgiving or christmas when Microsoft said they were outselling Sony 2 to 1, it was actually about 1.4 to 1. With that said Im surprised the ratio is so low. I expected 3 to 1. We'll see when Ioi updates along with npd before coming up with any real conclusions.

From data I've seen...some stores are 2:1 or more but others are alot less. Sony is probably right to object that 2:1 isn't completely representative, but if Microsoft is only getting data for some stores, the 2:1 figure is about right.

Given what happened with DMC4, anyone expecting a 3 to 1 ratio of sales in the USA is doomed to disappointment. What Microsoft needs to do is secure a few hundred thousand PS2 owners over the next couple of months, and then more at the end of the year with DLC. If they do that, they'll consider it a victory.

Microsoft's prognostications in relations to numbers are incredibly accurate. Claims to the contrary are utter nonsense. Microsoft has more often been proven right then they have been proven wrong. They seem to have an exceptional information gathering network. Which is no surprise given their core industry. They probably have more expansive resources then this very site.

Calling fowl on Microsoft for bias ignores the fact that they have a proven track record. While Sony has been more shall we say creative. I am still waiting for a certain someone at Sony to send me that thousand dollar check. They claimed to have actually sold out of their console early last year, and everyone knows that was a complete fabrication. I also remember a certain someone at Sony denying a price cut two days before it went into effect. The very same price cut Microsoft had told us about many months in advance.

Just looking at the track record you should go with the most precise forecaster you have available. That most assuredly is not Sony, and I hate to say this. However it should be said that this sites software tracking is still very hit or miss. So you have to be very cautious using the sales data for software until after the figures are balanced out with monthly sources.

I doubt Microsoft would make the claim unless they were reasonably certain about their data. They are just not prone to flights of fancy when it comes to numbers. You do not have to like Microsoft to respect their tracking fidelity.

@Dodece -- then why won't M$ tell us THEIR figures ... they just said retailer x estimates 2:1 sales in favour of 360 ... for unknown timeframe ...

and SONY responded saying their sources claim differently but are refusing to clarify ...

(360)1.5-2:1(PS3) in NA seems good for both consoles ...
(360)1:1.5 (Ps3) in Others seems resonable ...
.. so id guess 1.5:1 world wide which in incredibly good for both consoles ...

especially when you compare GTA3/VC/SA's PS2 vs. Xbox sales ... and see how GTA used to be dominant on 1 system -- now provivded both consoles have legs their won't be any "brand loyalty" crap ...

UPDATE - Microsoft tells Next-Gen that the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV is outselling the PlayStation 3 version by a wide margin in the US, but Sony questions Microsoft's claims

it's probably 1.5 - 1 . and sony probably won the hardware war because of this

"Asked if April NPD results would definitely show a GTA IV-driven Xbox 360 hardware boost, Greenberg said, "I think we'll have solid performance in April, but I think you might actually see a bigger impact in May.""

well 60% to 40% means 6/4 which means 3/2 which means they are wrong. lol

got to love VGC estimates. they make more sense.

Pre Orders != Sales.

Mostly hardcore gamers pre order games, casuals just go into a store and buy it.

Thank you for confirming what we already know, there are a greater percentage of hardcore gamers on the PS3. It makes sense that GTAIV would sell 2-1 in favor of the 360 since they mave more than double the user base in NA.

edit: I know ioi's early reports say 6:4, but that is first day sales which represents mostly the pre orderers.
