Forums - Gaming - Anyone un-impressed by this generation ?

so far there has been a ton of great games across all the platforms SSBB, Galaxy, Guitar hero, heavenly sword, gears of war, GTA IV.................the list goes on and on. plus the price drops we've seen so far, its the greatest time to be a gamer.

Well the thing that blew me away was Motorstorm on PS3's launch

It's true, as you age you tend to get jaded. That's why I stopped caring about graphics around the time 2.5D was fully replaced with 3D in games. Unreal Tournament was the last time that good graphics really impressed me, and the second last time game controls impressed me (aiming with the mouse was new to me, I was used to keyboard-only control).

I mostly skipped the previous two generations of consoles, because nothing really captured my imagination. But the Wii was something else. It was something new and original that rekindled my interest, and ironically it even renewed my interest in older games which I'd missed that weren't so avant-garde. I fell in love with the Metroid Prime series and Fire Emblem, even though the first used thumbstick controls and the second could be played with an NES pad.

And I love how all consoles are offering downloadable games which offer a chance for smaller, creative independent developers to get their ideas out.

Yes, I'm pretty impressed with this generation.

Well the fast advancing technology might make this generation seem unimpressive compared to the PC (not that the PC is superior, just saying the graphics might advance a lot faster than it did in previous generations), and I do think a lot of developers are playing it by the book: releasing sequels and games with derivative stories and gameplay.

But the gems far outweigh the crap, and I think the competition in this generation is leading to some games that will be remembered for a long time.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

I'm extremely impressed by the Wii.
I'm pretty impressed by the 360.
I'm hoping that by the end of the year, I'll be impressed by the PS3. Tons of potential there.

Personally, I think this is one of the better generations of gaming. A ton of diversity in gaming.

 i agree

I think the gen is def better than many others

Needs more RPGs. Not SRPGS. I hate those. Just good storyline (or bad emo teenager storyline) rpgs.

They don't call the 16 bit era the Golden Age of Gaming for nothing and so far this generation fails to instill me with the impression that its title is in any danger.

I think there's plenty of fun to be had this generation with the consoles on offer , but I find this current gen underwhelming .SNES ERA =Super Wow N64 era = WoW , PS1 & PS2 Era = Wow , PS3 , 360 , Wii era = Um...

Maybe i'm less easily impressed because i'm older now , i'm not exactly sure. How do you feel about this generation ?

I think you might be a little disenchanted because some of the childhood magic is gone.  I think that's a factor for everyone, but it usually doesn't effect us too much.  As Stof said, I think this will go down as one of the best gens.  The Wii brought something different to the table while all 3 duke it out (successfully) for great games.  I mean, this gen might have the greatest game of all time, correct? (had to do it, I love pushing buttons).  But really, the PS3 is an untapped force, and no matter who comes in first, second or third, everyone will have done well.  It's pretty good to be a gamer, I can't complain too much.  I think when we're little there's "magic" on top of the games.  Perhaps that's why the SNES and the "good ol' days" have such a stigma on us now.  I'm not going near discussing the best gen with a ten foot pole (unless someone wants to make a thread, hehe), but no, I'm pretty happy with my PS3, Wii and 360 (I don't play the 360, it's used by my brother 99% of the time.)

I like the SNES/GEN era the most, because of the games I enjoyed
but this gen comes second, mostly because its not set and done yet
so im not un-impress with this gen

I think this generation is really great in many ways. It's not my favorite, as that would be the 32/64 bit era plus the overlapping Dreamcast release, but I just loved gaming more back then.

For those saying the 16-bit era was better, what games made it so much better? I'm curious to know how it could beat out Gears of War, Twilight Princess, and Resistance.
