It's true, as you age you tend to get jaded. That's why I stopped caring about graphics around the time 2.5D was fully replaced with 3D in games. Unreal Tournament was the last time that good graphics really impressed me, and the second last time game controls impressed me (aiming with the mouse was new to me, I was used to keyboard-only control).

I mostly skipped the previous two generations of consoles, because nothing really captured my imagination. But the Wii was something else. It was something new and original that rekindled my interest, and ironically it even renewed my interest in older games which I'd missed that weren't so avant-garde. I fell in love with the Metroid Prime series and Fire Emblem, even though the first used thumbstick controls and the second could be played with an NES pad.

And I love how all consoles are offering downloadable games which offer a chance for smaller, creative independent developers to get their ideas out.

Yes, I'm pretty impressed with this generation.

"The worst part about these reviews is they are [subjective]--and their scores often depend on how drunk you got the media at a Street Fighter event."  — Mona Hamilton, Capcom Senior VP of Marketing
