Forums - Gaming - WTF! GTAIV 360: 720p, PS3: 620p ?!?

The lower natural resolution of the PS3's GTA IV looks better than the higher natural resolution of the 360's GTA IV.

@ starcraft

1280 x 1080, a 1080p rendering resolution. 1080 lines progressively displayed/rendered, he doesn't agree it's 1080p because it's below the resolution of current FullHD TVs. It's a much higher resolution than 720p games though (also vertical resolution is most relevant to the human eye).

The Super Stardust HD guys are very competent coders, they made some of the most impressive Amiga games. They stated they still have a lot of headroom for future games. And I agree it's a lot more impressive than any downloadable 360 game so far.

@ gebx

Just wait until you see the progress made to Motorstorm Pacifica and Resistance 2. Sequels to the two most impressive launch games.

@ NJ5

I just did a quick search and it seems to me that some of PS3's best games in terms of graphics (Uncharted and R&C) are 720p.

I agree those are maybe the best looking console games so far (for both PS3/360), but they haven't fully adapted their game engines for the PS3 yet.

Gran Turismo 5: Prologue (cars look amazing, realtime replays are like watching movies) and Super Stardust HD (insane amount of high speed activity and effects) in 1080p are very impressive.

GT5p still isn't 1080p, Mike.

yes it is? what is it then?

lol so why they claims that ps3 version is better

Man , and I thaught that the controversy will come from the bad language used in the game :P

point is there are dozoens of NATIVE 1080p games on PS3 there are like 3 on xbox.... Halo 3 is microsofts BIGGEST GAME. if bungie could NOT do it on a game the size of halo then i can NOT be done.......

The issue here is not "can the ps3 do it" its "why didnt rockstar do it".... the issuse with halo is "it can NOT be done"

Thats is why it does not make a difference. A 3rd party game vs THE NUMBER ONE exculsive game on the planet........ if i had to put money down id think halo would be in 1080p not GTA4... a 3rd parties 1st next gen game on ps3 and its on 2 different systems vs and second party game on one system that had a budget of only god knows what.......

NJ5 you dont see the point so i had to spell it out for you...

I perfectly see that, but the hipocrisy is still visible and true from some people.

By the way, what are those dozens of 1080p native PS3 games? Let's filter out the ones with framerate problems and/or simple graphics, and see what remains. I just did a quick search and it seems to me that some of PS3's best games in terms of graphics (Uncharted and R&C) are 720p.

Lair, GT5P, Virtua tennis, ridge racer, NBA 07 ( or 08 i 4get). those are from memory here is the proof... do another quick search......

All im stating here is that when halo came out it was suppose to be the end all game for everyone... i just dont see another reason why its not 1080p. huge games like lair and GT5 are 1080p....... SO we all jumped at halo because its the biggest game.... i mean GTA4 is huge but its a 3rd party game and i was expecting nuthin more really lol. i mean call of duty 4 was 640p on xbox lol.

LOL how did this derail into a PS3 has not many true 1080p games thread?

Which is btw. most probably a correct statement. And btw this is awesome. As long as most people (like me) have 720p TVs it would be pretty idiotic to hope for 1080p games that have 50% pixel operations per screen pixel.

After you have a reasonable resolution the added quality from higher resolutions gets lower and lower. From my PC gaming times I can say that you definitely NEED 800*600 otherwise everything is jaggy and small details cannot be replicated (text is terrible for example), 1024*768 was my preferred resolution (I would play in 1024*768 and optimize the other settings for it) and everything above was at best a marginal improvement, nice for headshots in ET but not much more.

So 720p is one of the best improvements gaming ever had because SD looks awful, 1080p is nice if the game isn't pixel bound but generally you should hope that the developers use the pixel operations they have for better lighting, shadows etc. instead of upping the resolution to 1080p.

Well I went over the thread where he originally posted the findings and he seems to be right.
While I realize this game does not come to the Wii, (which is too bad because I would've got it for the Wii but is not good enough to justify a new console purchase), all the Sony fanboys that say that it is worth the smoother frame rate are wrong, because a lower resolution can have a higher frame rate than higher resolution. Can both the HD and the 620 versions "look" the same? I am sure they can, but even if the inferior 620 version looks better, doesn't this prove something that the more powerful machine (supposedly PS3) might not be soo powerful?

If this is true (and it looks like it is) between this, the popups in Xbox 360 version, I think it is funny that it has so many 10s and is being called the best game ever built by some. And this is ignoring the fact that sometimes the game freezes up like Bully.

*cough* PS3 version *cough*

Rockstar responded about the issue, they've advised those having issues should erase the data and re install it... no word on if that works yet

@BengaBenga

Right on, hopefully that will shut them up for a while

"He did ask me to make sure that my harddrive wasn't full and that I had the latest firmware update, but confessed that that really isn't what's causing most of the problem. He also said that the Xbox 360 is having the "exact same problem," which has further stumped their tech folks." - Kotaku.

There's also 360 owners reporting lockup issues on Gaf, it seems to be during cut scenes just like the PS3 60gb lock ups.

Most HD Ready TVs have a native resolution slightly higher than 720p (768p), so you get a few extra lines rendered when 1080p content is downscaled to your screen's native resolution.

1280 x 1080, is a very nice resolution. You get a similar or better result as from 720p content on a HD Ready TV. If you have a FullHD TV you get the benefit from even higher resolution. For a small to average TV HD Ready is IMO good enough, for an above average TV IMO 1080p is well recommended (especially if you use it to watch Blu-Ray movies as well).

BTW, GT5p and SSHD are both 60 FPS despite their much higher resolution, so the PS3 is powerful enough. Further gains will be made, there's still a lot of headroom left for developers to tap into by optimising their game engines.

Yay 48 lines. I think we can agree that it wouldn't make sense to render 200% pixels to display 105%

This doesn't have anything to do with the power of the PS3. My 7 years old computer COULD do 1600*1200. But every PC gamer whose PC isn't cutting-edge anymore knows the problem. You have finite resources and you want the game to look as good as possible.

So you have lots of parameters.
- resolution
- lighting
- shadows
- HDR,
- Antialiasing
- Blur
- water effects
- Frames per second

etc. pp. If you increase one of them, one or multiple other have to go down, so you choose a setting for each that the overall picture looks best.
And this will most of the time not include resolutions of 1920*1080 Pixels.

I think GT5 is a good example for a game that has really high numbers of polygons and not so many effects so a high resolution makes sense. But it doesn't have anything to do with the "power of the PS3".
