Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Drafting/ slipstreaming in MK:Wii

The slipstreaming feauture in Mario Kart Wii is actually my only complaint with the game as of now.

Why? Because it is way too easy to accomplish. From what I figured, the rule is: drive remotely behind another kart/ group of karts and off you go.

That has nothing to do anymore with the skills that feature required in MK64 back in the days. There, the technique was pulled off usually only on straight streets like in the desert and you had to really drive behind the other kart for some time to get it accomplished. Now it works everywhere/ anywhere, even in the weirdest curves etc.

I guess that is why unskilled players like Rol actually thought this is a new feature.

I just got it yesterday and haven't really noticed it being that easy. That said I never really used it that much. Is it really that easy?

Ehhh, I only ever use it at the very start of the race to get ahead of the pack.

Quite useful :)

it happened so rarely in other games that it was pretty much useless. Besides, driving directly behind a kart for any length of time is incredibly dangerous, if they have any skill.

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

You've only played the game offline, it's much harder to do it against a human.

Actually, it was useful at specific points on tracks and made high tactical sense/ enhanced the tactics in MK64. And you could see if the other guy still had some item in multiplayer. But I used it a lot, so did my friends. And the danger made it even more thrilling.

I guess I have to practice my slipstreaming then. Now that you mention it, I did notice the boost I was getting from it without really even trying to do it.

I don't get to use it too much as I am usually in front.

and if you are in the kart ahead then you should be aware of it and drop a banana/fire a shell. If you let the person behind do it to you then you are a fool, and if you do it to someone else then they are a fool.

Another way to avoid the person beind doing it to you (I think, I haven't tested it properly but it seems to work) is to go into a drift, If you are in a drift and the other person isn't (and vice versa) it doesn't seems to work.

I thought it appeared totally random... How do you pull it of exactly?

@chrizum: drive behind another kart. Technically, then you have less wind resisitance and thats how you get the boost.

Ever watched tour de france? Those guys dont drive behind each other to look at their respective behinds.
