so yes, PS3 selling slower than PS2 that is obvious. But PS2 was 1st console of past-gen sales while PS3 is only third (later second). I completely agree that competition (Wii360) is reducing PS3 sales.

People getting bored in gaming (which would prove Nintendos strategy correct, since the previous market wouldn't exist anymore)?

 I really can't see how Wii wouldn't have killed the sales of the others, especially when competition isn't selling anywhere close to expectations and how Wii wouldn't have affected to slow sales, unless the market really crashed.

I m not saying Wii is not affecting PS360 sales. I m just saying PS360 are selling WAY too well for 2nd and 3rd console. DC was completely killed by PS2, GC/Xbox were greatly inhibited. In fact, all the focus was on the PS2 and only on the PS2.

Now, the Wii is selling like hot cake since her release but in the same time (OUTSIDE of JAPAN), PS360 are selling VERY WELL despite their price (400$PS3, compared to the 250$ Wii). It is like the 2 consoles (Wii vs PS360) are selling to 2 different big markets allowing them to both surviving.

Just look at this : PS3, the third console is dramatically increasing her sales despite her slow start (slow start in console world = DEATH) :

At the contrary, GC/Xbox have reduced their sales progressviely with the time.

It means ALL the console are selling better than the last gen 1st/2nd/3rd console counterpart.

WHY ?

Because Wii expanded the market to casuals and non-gamers since DAY 1. This allow PS360 to focus on the western hardcore gamers market and to continue to sell very well despite their higher price.

For me, This gen is NOT like last gen. Definitively.

 


So, how can you say that PS2 did kill GC and XBox? What if it was the lack of games? OK, so 360 says hi in NA, but despite it saying hi, Wii sells the best, and apparently people are getting PS360:s since Wii is so hard to find. In PAL regions, i don't think PS3 is selling anywhere near PS2 levels, since if i recall TheSources "50 million" article, Wii is actually trailing behind PS2 by quite a margin and considering PS3 trailing behind Wii. So, if the market crashed, then what all the fanboys are complaining about? If Wii would have been similar console to PS360, the 3 would have split the number of consoles PS3 and 360 have sold combined by 3 of them. So, Wii is nothing but good for the industry anyway you want to look at it. PS2 was the second in the market, just like PS3, and PS2 killed Dreamcasts sales before PS2 launch.

 The problem this generation is the Wii is SOOOO different in all respects from the other two consoles (controller, GAMES, price, technology) that it is infinitely more likely that consumers will own the Wii + One other console, than it was in the previous generation. In the previous generation the PS2 had almost all the games that you could play on it rivals, making the owning of 2 consoles almost stupid.

This time round there are so many differences between the Wii and the HD consoles that owning 2 consoles won't be rare for gamers.... (and don't anyone tell me there is not a SINGLE game on other consoles you are not curious about because you are lying)

==> yes, I believe. Games that were released on PS2 and not on GC/DC/Xbox as GTA for example. The same that are still not on Wii ...

Europe :  all very close.

PAL : Wii = PS2 > PS3.

So basically, despite selling very well in PAL/Europe, Wii is not able to STOP PS3 sales that remains very high for a 3rd console.

I think you could have said the same about last gen.  There were many great Nintendo games that had absolutely no chance of appearing on PS2.  If PS2 owners could make do without owning Zelda, Metroid Prime, Pikmin, Smash Bros Melee, Eternal Darkness then I think Wii owners could make do without owning COD4, GTA4, Halo 3, MGS4 especially since those games are all tailored to the same group while the Nintendo games cater to different audiences.

I think you could have said the same about last gen. There were many great Nintendo games that had absolutely no chance of appearing on PS2.  Of course there are exclusives in both generations, the difference this time is that with the new controller, anyone can play these games. Last gen, these games were controlled with the usual controllers for all consoles. If the Wii had a regular controller, I doubt it would sell better than the others (or the GC for that matter).....

Going by such a claim, we are to assume that the PS3 is the default purchase and that the "price difference" is what is causing people to buy the Wii instead in droves?

It seems strange to me. I was always under the assumption that people were buying these platforms to play the games on them. And Blu-Ray movies for PS3 too.

Hummm....

The PS3 is $400 since months, so that's like $150 difference. And yet, Wii is still destroying it in sales.

In Europe, XB360 is 200 € against Wii at 250 €. Wii is still destroying it like XB360 doesn't even exist.

So the base for your deduction, price, is completely wrong. Sorry, you'll have to find sth more complex.
