What is the #1 Best Selling PS5 Game?

GTA V 0 0%

A COD Game 0 0%

A FIFA/EA Sports FC Game 0 0%

GOW Ragnarok 0 0%

Spider-Man 2 1 100.00%

Other 0 0%

Total:1

GTA VI is releasing in a matter of weeks. Without a doubt it will become the best selling PS5 title in short order. But what game will it be taking the top spot from exactly?

Do we know what PS5 game is currently the best selling title on the console 6 years into its lifespan. With the shift to digital sales and less transparency on sales figures is there a definitive answer on which game is the current number one?

Many of the PS5's most high profile titles being multiplatform, even some published by Sony themselves, further obfuscates the sales figures.

If I had to guess I would say GTA V is currently the top selling PS5 game, seeing as that game has continued to sell extremely well in recent years. But even that is tricky because the game was offered free to PS5 owners for some time back in 2021. So those copies should not count as "sold". Also the GTA V Online has been offered for sale separately, so how should those sales be counted?

Other potential top sellers could be Spider-Man 2 or GOW Ragnarok but those don't have updated sales data for the PS5 version only as far as I am aware.

Maybe a FIFA/EA Sports FC title or one of the COD games?

Of course the true answer is Astro's Playroom, but that does not really count because it is pre-installed.

Do we know for sure or can anyone guess?

I don’t know which is the best seller but my guess is the game that has sold like 400M copies. I would need to look a bit further into this…

(In an ideal world, Astro Bot would be number one. But that’s just me.)

I'd actually really like to know this. I miss the days when we had software tracking here, before the rise of digital made this such an incomplete picture.

Yeah, I really miss the days when once in a while we had a brand new chart with the top selling games of the week. Even if sometimes adjustments were necessary, it was something to look for.

The pre-orders charts were fun too.

I'd guess GTA5 in unit sales and Spider-Man 2 in revenue.

It would make sense to think is GTA but it's basically imposible to say because neither T2, Activision/MS nor Sony have said exact numbers.

Also that's not fun, what is fun is to think about the games that were actually from this generation. Indie devs use a rule to calculate the projection of the number of reviews that they will get based on sales, this number is important because the algorithm of digital stores starts promoting your game after a number of positive reviews, between 1 to 3% of people who buy a digital game will leave a review so the number of reviews of a game multiplied by 100, 50 or 33 is an approximation of the number of copies sold. Currently Spider-Man 2 is this generation's game among all the listed in the pool with the most reviews with an approximation of more than 9M to 26M copies sold only digital. Then it comes the part about physical sales, I know people want to believe it's 50-50 but in most cases physical represents a third or less of the total of copies sold so you would be talking about more than 13M to 39M copies sold (No PC sales included for obvious reasons, also it sold 1.7M on PC). Then you also have to take into consideration what you said about people not necessarily buying the game because it is available on PS+ and the fact that the review culture on PS isn't as prominent as it is on PC, most of the people who buy a Spider-Man game to have fun after work don't give a damn about reviews.

Then let's talk a little about GTA. GTA has the most reviews among all those games in general the problem is that the way the PS Store works when a new version of a game is released it takes the place of the original version and inherits the reviews so the number isn't only from the PS5 version it also carries the reviews from the PS4 version. The same happens with COD if you go to the store you are going to see most CODs from this gen have around 740k reviews but that's because 6 COD games are being sold in the store as a package and those reviews is the number combined of the 6 of them.

All those considerations basically to get the conclusion that is safe to say Spider-Man 2 is the game from this generation that has sold the most on PS5. And yes that was fun lol.

In November 2025, Circana posted PS5 software lifetime sales in both revenue and units. We can use that in conjunction with other data to extrapolate sales.

In units sales:
1. COD BLOPS6
2. Miles Morales
3. Spider-Man 2
4. Hogwarts Legacy
6. GTA5
8. Ragnarok

In dollar sales:
1. COD BLOPS6
2. Spider-Man 2
6. Hogwarts Legacy
7. Ragnarok
8. Miles Morales
GTA5 didn't make the top 10.

A few notes:
- IIRC Spider-Man and God of War skew toward the US market, whereas Hogwarts Legacy is more Europe biased. Meaning the global rankings may favor Hogwarts Legacy.
- GTA5 is massive everywhere, but the PS5 version is a very late port that also offers a free upgrade to PS4 players.
- FIFA/FC and Gran Turismo heavily favor EU.
- COD, being an annual series like sports games, has poor legs. So it's safe to say that Spider-Man 2 will beat the best selling COD in the US if it hasn't already. But some COD games might win ultimately when the remaining PS4 players upgrade.
