I'm old, so the newest title is almost 25 years old.

If it makes you feel younger, my newest title is 34 years old, and even that one is a more of an honorable mention (I actually have only 6 or 7 crucial formative games, but image would look weird to me if I didn't fill all 9 spots).

That was tough, but I think these 9 are the ones that have shaped my taste the most over the years.

My memory is hazy, so I'm not sure was it exactly Sea Wolf or some similar game (maybe it was Sea Wolf II), but yeah, that's my first video game I've played, back in 78 or 79.

I see that. Quite vintage. I'm 46, but I didn't really grow up on playing anything else except a hand-me-down Intellivision, the handful of games on my dad's C64, and whatever was in the local arcade, but there was no one game that really stood out as something I'd consider formative. The first game to really blow me away was Super Mario Bros. I still remember the first time I saw that game. It was over at one of my mom's friends' house, and their sons had an NES. I absolutely had to have one of my own, and finally got my wish on Christmas Day of 1988.

@Vinther1991 I fixed your post so the image would display correctly. Try uploading your image to an image hosting site next time. It broke the thread somehow by posting directly. Not sure why. Maybe the file size was too big?

Yeah, some 10 years older. I was mainly exposed to arcades and home computers, and given that I had access to virtually everything on C64 and ZX, due to certain friend of mine, I played crapload of games back in those days, so I really got to see what's on offering, and I guess my personal interests played a big role in what stood out.

SMB is funny one for me - by the time I got to play SMB in later part of 80s, my taste in platforming was already pretty much set in stone, leaning toward exploration platformers and eventually Metroidvanias, so it never really clicked with me, though I find SMBs to be exceptionally crafted games.

Most of them aren't the best games I've ever played, but I believe they are the ones that shaped my preferences.

Chrono Trigger: Sparked my love for turn-based RPGs. Building a party and strategizing—it all started with Chrono Trigger.

Diablo 2: The game that taught me the joy of creating my own character and build. The pleasure of replayability—playing through with completely different characters and strategies.

Pokémon Yellow: Pokémon—a love-hate relationship. It used to be central to my entertainment—tournaments, card games, the Smogon community, hundreds of hours of fun... now reduced to a bunch of trash games... it's sad.

At least I can still play on Smogon, and enjoy the card games and mobile titles...

Kof 97: My love for fighting games was born here. It all started in arcades with ten-cent tokens.

Mega Man X: My love for action side-scrollers. Any game involving a knight, ninja, combat robot, vampire slayer, or wizard... it all started here.

Res 4: The game that sparked my passion for games with an over-the-shoulder camera perspective.

Fate/Grand Order: The game that broke down my prejudice against mobile games! I’ve been playing it for over 10 years now!!! Not to mention all the other mobile games I play.

Dark Souls: Soulslikes! What began in Diablo II found a home here, took on a new form, and became very special!

Monster Hunter World: I had "danced" with Monster Hunter before but never truly fell in love with it. That all changed here! Much like with Dark Souls, what originated in Diablo II found a new form here and became something very special!
