I understand both sides to this.
Playstation
- Funded Death Stranding 1 and 2, but didn't do the numbers they expected. For DS1 part of it is Sony didn't want to publish it on PC or Xbox so they didn't get that money.
- Kojima missing deadlines (although this game is like 1-2 years in development so what deadlines was there?)
- Kojima going over budget (again).
- Don't want to risk another failure after a bunch of others.
Kojima
- Got blindsided by a company he's had a long relationship with.
- Does not want his game(s) to be exclusive (completely valid as what independent developer/publisher wants their games exclusive nowadays).
- Shocked Sony would cancel a game that goes back to what Kojima helped define back in the 80s/90s and would most likely be more successful than Death Stranding.
I think Playstation should have stuck with Kojima because he actually gets stuff done and is a better bet than their live service strategy. Not only that, but they would have TV and movies to go with this that could help recoup costs. XBOX has a huge opportunity to make Physint and OD big franchises. Even though I doubt both games will be Xbox and PC only (most likely timed exclusive) it's something I think you have to bet on.
