Absolutely. The table is set, if they want it. But I don't think they want it. I think they're after something else. Being top dog in console gaming is low on their list of priorities now... if at all.

No, the people who are part of the vocal backlash are not the majority. It might seem like a big deal on game forums & social media but it’s being way overblown. The vast majority of people prefer digital media when it comes to shows/movies/music/games.

Of course they have. microsoft just needs to play their cards right, release a better system and have a good library of exclusive titles. But obviously on gaming forums most people project the current state into the future. It was totally impossible for Xbox360 to challenge Playstation 3. the Wii U and the vita couldn't possibly flop. The switch could never be a success, etc. It's been like that forever. And also, to many people Playstation is always and will always be the market leaders, no matter what the numbers say.

Yet digital only consoles barely sell. Maybe the people making the noise are in the majority.

Isn’t it the case that in Japan the digital PS5 is always outselling the disc. Often by a lot.

Phil Spencer nailed it when he said the Eighth Generation was the worst to lose. Xbox One was more competitive with PS4 than Series X/S is with PS5 but they still lost significantly. Digital distribution for consoles became a thing in the Seventh Generation but by the early to mid Eighth generation it was the norm for an undeniable majority of players. People who have gamed on PlayStation for two generations now are going to be very tough to get over to Xbox as a console and especially unlikely as a primary or sole console. |
Another thing is in Xbox's case switching to PC is relatively easy due to things like Xbox Play Anywhere so in the past few years a higher percentage of Xbox Series owners will have switched to PC than PS5 owners and by and large those people won't be coming back.

Whats your point? Any other countries you want to add to that? Maybe Bulgaria prefers digital as well. Doesnt really change the fact that most PS5s sold worldwide are the ones with a disc drive.
I doubt it. Outer Worlds 2, Death Loop, Psychonauts 2, and Indiana Jones are the only Xbox games I've really liked this generation.

It's because the region locked PS5 in Japan is digital only and like half the price of the multi-language disc model. Many if not most of its buyers are probably buying the add-on with it.

Who cares how much the disc based consoles sell if people aren’t buying physical games for them? Digital sales are ~85% of PS software revenue and ~90% of XB software revenue and that’s likely going to keep going up.
Also, digital edition sales have been going up throughout the generation. Mat from Circana said digital editions made up 49% of PS5 sales and 66% of Xbox sales in 2025.
This decision is not going to have a major impact because most people already prefer digital and it’s not like 100% of the people that prefer physical are going to boycott. Some will move to digital with no fuss, some will complain but go along with it and some will boycott and jump shit but that’s going to be a small percent of the their audience.
