From Circana's Mat Piscatella:

Seeing this old stat being thrown around. Wanted to update.

As of June 2026, digital editions comprise 27% of total LTD US unit sales of PS5 hardware.

For Xbox Series, 52% of total LTD US unit sales are digital only editions.

It's 0% for Switch 2.

% of digital consoles sold in the US by platform:

  • Xbox Series - 52%
  • PS5 - 27%
  • NS2 - 0% (No digital model)

And if I'm not mistaken, this data doesn't take into account the optional disc drive. With the disc drives accounted for, probably less than 20% of PS5's are digital only...

Mat has shared more info (All below is from him):

Here are the number of physical PlayStation games that sold at least 100k units in the US during the year's calendar first half going back to 2003.

Sure. I can't disclose just PlayStation here, so I hope the total market look for the 12-month period ending June also going back to 2003 will suffice.

It's a one post anecdote on a short form social media platform. Anyways, I can't disclose title specific unit totals, but none of the 7 that did exceed 100k physical units in the US during the 1H reached 275k. But sure, both demand and supply play roles here.

And it's US-only. Yep. Clearly stated. And US =/= world. But I don't have global physical data, so not much I can do there.

And we don't have to guess what that looks like. As a retailer and distributor based right here in Canada, our physical game sales are up by double digits in 2026 compared to last year. Now, see, you've shifted from PlayStation to total market. But ok, US physical software units are up 4% YTD.

But that 4% growth is because of the Switch 2 and physical sales growth on Nintendo platforms (but you know that). Other ecosystems are showing percentage drops from the teens to the mid 30s.

One more thing worth asking: is the shift away from physical actually making the industry healthier? No. Never said it was. I'm not sure anyone believes this to be the case. Even the folks at the companies making these decisions. I think it's a bad thing on a long list of bad at the moment.

This isn't just about whether the numbers add up. I mean, you could have led with that, honestly. Because you really started out strong on the numbers not adding up. Anyways, hope this helps. Best of luck on the petition.

I think a major reason physical sales are declining is because they're intentionally just not supplying enough of them, just one more tactic to promote digital.

If physical didn't matter, why is the more expensive physical PS5 dominating the digital model? Most people obviously value physical.

Classically, supply follows demand.  The lack of supply and strong demand would have lea to crazy prices.  At some point the consumer has to accept some responsibility for what is happening.  I am honest enough to admit that nearly all of my purchases in the last 5 years have been almost all digital.  No one forced me to.  I did it for the convenience.  And obviously, the reason why physical PS5 dominates is because folks have physical media from the PS4 generation.  I had tons of PS4 discs. Its really that simple.  One imagines that a disc drive will be made for the PS6 for people who have that older media.  I expect Sony to allow me to play the discs I already own in way shape or form on PS6 even if they end production of discs next gen.

The physical data is pretty interesting with just how massive of a drop there has been the past few years. I wonder what caused physical units to fall off a cliff from 2022-2025 after declining a lot more gradually from 2017-2021.

The number of physical games dropping isn't simply just digital taking over. There are two other main reasons for it.

1. Games take longer to make now, so there are less games.

2. Companies are focusing more on their strong ips and are only releasing those games nowadays. Gone are the days of multiple new ip and their signature ip in one generation topping the list. Instead there will be only one of those in one generation.

37 million physical sales for 12 month till june 2026 in the US, is still a at least $1 Billion. And that's only US.

Guessing wold wide physical games could be looking at a $3-4 billion market even in 2026. Seems so weird to abandon it completely for any company.

In late 2020 new games went from $60 to $70. 2020 and 2021 probably still had majority previous generation and price.

I doubt that's much of a factor since it's not like new game sales in general had a sharp decline.

Revenue is likely the same or better, but quantity has declined.

I think the take away for digital sales is that the monthly digital sales practically eclipse yearly physical sales.
