Having looked into it, I say we move data centers into space anyway. It's better that they're up there instead of wasting space and resources on Earth.

Perhaps by having them more as smaller, individual data satellites instead of large data centers, it would be easier to run them in space without so much strain on their inner workings.

As much as I detest AI CEOs like Musk and Bezos, if they're planning on having data centers in space, then let them. They obviously have the funds to do this, and then the AI data centers down here can be shut down or at least scaled back.

Yes I'm aware of my very vocal hatred of AI and AI data centers, but if there can be a compromise then I think compromise is the better option.

Those are my thoughts, and I'm willing to hear yours.

It's not happening anytime soon. It's better for them to come up with a more energy solution for AI instead of trying to increase the amount of resources needed to feed gen AI. I don't see a problem to have the AI running locally on your preferred device even without a need of internet connection.

If the governments would do their jobs, we wouldn't be having these problems right now. They needed to treat AI like the immediate threat that it is and ban it from certain industries immediately. They also needed to put a legal cap on data centers, how close to city limits they can be, slap water regulations on them etc. It all needed to be done right away... but none of that has happened. Instead, they're just sitting back like... well... when it becomes a problem, we'll maybe look into it. It's very frustrating.

And aren't some companies working on improving energy efficiency and decreasing water consumption by AI data centers?

Some politicians have called for regulations and restrictions on AI but they're not the ones at the top of major governments. What if people rioted over the lack of regulations and restrictions for AI?

You think data centers are driving up prices now? Wait til we have to launch all that hardware into orbit, to say nothing of cooling components in the vacuum of space with nothing to absorb the heat.

Yes, you can run local LLMs model on your PC or something like Spark DGX. But, in the future I believe a smartphone might be able to run a local AI software. They can improve data center efficiency, the problem is that the users are at the mercy of AI solutions providers for output quality. With potential future local based models the user can fine tune and train AI on their own and optimize it for their work.
