Forums - Sales - Core gamer market is saturated, devs/pubs need to embrace casual gaming

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/30356/Core-gamer-market-is-saturated

“The middling performance of the 360, coupled with the PS3’s slow start has led IDG to the conclusion that the core gamer market is in fact saturated. On a combined hardware and software basis, the global market grew by 21 per cent with the DS and the Wii in 2007, but declined by seven per cent without the two Nintendo platforms. In short, the balance of power has significantly shifted towards Nintendo.” - IDG Research

I Think after June this may be true.

very interesting. Goes with what I've been saying all along to people that say that Nintendo isn't competing with this generation of consoles. If they aren't competing directly, then this generation of consoles has actually shrunk the market rather than expanded it. If Nintendo isn't factored into the equation, this gen has been a huge failure compared to previous generations, moving backwards, actually hurting the industry. But once Nintendo is factored into this generation, then suddenly this gen is a huge freaking success.

This reminds of the thread about Epic not wanting to make Wii games.

I agree with Epic as they are not into making casual games. But i think alot of developers don't see much money in the Wii. Developers like Sega are doing a good job as the Wii is perfect for them, but i don't really see that many that are able to make a significant amount of money on the Wii without withdrawing their efforts on the other consoles. Nintendo's games are the driving force for the Wii, i don't think anyone else can make much money from it.

Although i don't completely disagree, since the "core gamer" is getting less and less new games, in form of longer developement times and in form of sequels that basically are just new levels to the previous games (but hey, the graphics are better!), which causes people to focus more on games that they see "good" and play them more online.
So it may be saturated in terms of how varied the "core gamers" games are, or the lack of it.
But, there's also the thing, that the "core gamers" too play with the Wii.

Observation itself wasn't bad, but how it was read was. Edit: @Toasty: You're right, but only telling half of the truth. While 3rd parties are hardly making money with Wii, they aren't doing any with other consoles. In fact, they are just losing money. Look at EA for example, while their focus has been PS360, they are only making heavy losses at the same time when smaller devs have focused on Wii and are doing better than ever. Like Grasshopper or Atlus for example.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

The fact that the industry was stagnating in not new news actually, there were various reports on that even as far back in '05 and '06 even.

Thank goodness for Nintendo for being bold enough to step out of the box and reinvigorate the industry! Now if certain 3rd party publishers would stop pissing in thier pity pot and help lure these new gamers into the richer world of what video games can be then what a wonderful world it would be.

Wow , I actually agree with this hairy guy :o Yes , there are probably less core gamers then there where before , and the best example is the games difficulty level going down .

Or maybe going back to around 2000 and ask Yamauchi or Iwata about their opinion. I had no other point to mention this, but to point out that the situation we're in at this moment isn't coincidence or luck.

Thats like saying that market for fast sports cars is saturated. Sure much more accessable cars need be made for general public (shovelware) but expensive sports cars will always have a market.

did you not read any of that, disolitude? Or do you not know what saturated means? Too many people are making sports cars and the market isn't alowing for them all to be successful. The market is actually shrinking. There will always be a market for sports cars, but if that market is stagnating and shrinking, and it's becoming harder and harder to profit on sports cars, Ferrari might want to think about making a four door sedan.

Read the 1st/3rd party charts.   3rd parties already make up over 60% of revenue on Wii and that's with putting very little effort into it.

Please stop posting such blatantly false summations.  They've been repeatedly denounced over and over again and it's getting irritating just hearing people spout it again even after having been proven wrong.
