Forums - Sales - Comparison of X360 shipped vs sell through

Microsoft shipped 17.7m consoles by the end of 2007. And according to the lastest earnings, in Q1 2008 they shipped another 1.3m consoles.

Let's see how the official shipped data compares with VGChartz:

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 22nd Apr 1989 to 29th Dec 2007:

ConsoleX360
Total
16,103,506

VGChartz has X360 at 16,103,506 by the end of 2007, which leaves about 1.6m consoles in the retail channel. As per ioi's Nintendo analysis Wii has about 1m consoles in the retail channel so I will assume 1.6m sounds about right for 360.

Now let's see how this compares with the most recent data for which MS claimed 19m 360 shipped:

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 22nd Apr 1989 to 29th Mar 2008:

ConsoleX360
Total
17,943,684

For this period VGChartz has 360 at 17,943,684, which reduces the retail stock from 1.6m to 1m. Now, 1m is the Wii retail stock and I'm hard to believe this is possible.

As far as I can tell either the Wii is under tracked or the 360 is over tracked. Honestely I think there should be about 2x more 360/PS3 stock in retail than Wiis.

PS3 retail stock level by the end of 2007 was just 100k more than the 360 at 1,648,514 while Wii's retail stock at the end of 2007 was 802,994. These numbers sounds much more reasonable to me.

So, I believe the Wii is under tracked about 200k while the 360 is over tracked 600k. That adjustment will put the Wii retail stock back at it's 800k and 360s at 2x that and the same as both PS3 and 360 at the end of 2007.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: Bad thread name... added much more info that I initially wanted :) ioi, we need to be able to change thread name, please ;)

Optimistic predictions for 2008 (Feb 5 2008): Wii = 20M, PS3 = 14M, X360 = 9.5M

What if MS meant roughly 19 million X360s shipped?

If the exact figure is let's say 19.2 million, you'd have 1.25 million stuffed in the retail channel right now. That's not very far from 1.6 million at the beginning of 2008. Remember the X360 shortages during Jan-Feb? Logic says that MS probably didn't stuff the retail very hard during Q1 2008.

Bumping... want ioi to do the official analysis like he did for the Nintendo :)

PS: I don't remember his official analysis for end of 2007 either. Only remember Nintendo, anyone has a link to last quarter VGC vs Earnings analysis?

Shortages were not that bad and retail is fully stuffed for a long time now. Easilly twice as many as Wii, wouldn't you agree?

Slimebeast if the number was 19.2 they would have said 19.2 (I'm assuming this is comming from MS' reports and not someon elses speculation)

But yes ioi said 1.5mil is expected for 360 and Ps3...  I wonder where those consoles went... **cough**UK**cough** <

but im really just curious as to what Ps3 numbers are... god damn why is it may 15 another 3 weeks.

Microsoft said that they had NA shortages right through to the end of March. One million consoles in stock worldwide has always been seen as sufficient during off-peak periods. At this point in time I expect the number in stores is probably closer to 1.5 million, as Microsoft tries to stuff the chain before GTAIV.

theres the problem with your post. You dont think MS did a huge manufacturing over haul to replenish stock? If they didn't they obviously believed that the stock was sufficient enough for the demand. Obviously if they didn't they believed they werent hurting sales.

1 million "unsold" during a non-holiday period is indicative of pretty short supply. I'd expect PS3 to be more like 2-2.5m and 360 to be more like 1.5m "unsold". - The Boss

Also if you believe the channel is stuffed with the same amount you are believing that 360's shortages are similar to Wii's... which is humorous. (Heres a hint why. 360's where never that hard to come by.)

 fix'd

Remember, I doubt there are more than 50k (if that) sitting around in Japan, meaning that Microsoft can have decent supply the world over with a million a lot easier than Nintendo can.

Also, just because they have similar "stock" doesn't mean they would have similar supply issues. Look at the Wii sales WW (or just NA and Others if you wish) for the last few months, and compare them to the 360s WW (or NA+Others, since 360 in Japan is... you know), and you'll see that the Wii needs more stock to have healthy supply.

Take for example if the Wii has (according to Nintendo and minus VGChartz) about 400k in stock in NA. That would be about enough for two weeks of sales (if that). That's a supply issue. While 400k for the 360 in NA would be enough for about a months worth of sales (5 weeks plus extra).

It's debatable whether the 360 was having some supply issues earlier this year, but since the 360 actually beat the PS3 in March (according to VgChartz AND NPD), after being beaten in Jan and Feb (according to NPD), it's not hard to say that there might have been a few supply issues.

Basically, I think it's good as it is. Without Japan, and lower sales than Wii everywhere else, it doesn't surprise me that they'd have similar stock WW that's "unsold."

Edit: I'd also like to point out that a million Wiis in stores WW would only last 2 weeks plus a little of a third week, while a million 360s in stores WW would last somewhere around 6 fulls weeks, plus most of a 7th week. And perhaps retailers are less willing to accept large amounts of them, since Microsoft stuffed the channel last year, and without Vista, Microsoft has no way to force units into the channel?
