Microsoft shipped 17.7m consoles by the end of 2007. And according to the lastest earnings, in Q1 2008 they shipped another 1.3m consoles.
Let's see how the official shipped data compares with VGChartz:
VGChartz Hardware data for the period 22nd Apr 1989 to 29th Dec 2007:
| Console | X360 |
Total | 16,103,506 |
VGChartz has X360 at 16,103,506 by the end of 2007, which leaves about 1.6m consoles in the retail channel. As per ioi's Nintendo analysis Wii has about 1m consoles in the retail channel so I will assume 1.6m sounds about right for 360.
Now let's see how this compares with the most recent data for which MS claimed 19m 360 shipped:
VGChartz Hardware data for the period 22nd Apr 1989 to 29th Mar 2008:
| Console | X360 |
Total | 17,943,684 |
For this period VGChartz has 360 at 17,943,684, which reduces the retail stock from 1.6m to 1m. Now, 1m is the Wii retail stock and I'm hard to believe this is possible.
As far as I can tell either the Wii is under tracked or the 360 is over tracked. Honestely I think there should be about 2x more 360/PS3 stock in retail than Wiis.
PS3 retail stock level by the end of 2007 was just 100k more than the 360 at 1,648,514 while Wii's retail stock at the end of 2007 was 802,994. These numbers sounds much more reasonable to me.So, I believe the Wii is under tracked about 200k while the 360 is over tracked 600k. That adjustment will put the Wii retail stock back at it's 800k and 360s at 2x that and the same as both PS3 and 360 at the end of 2007.
What do you guys think?
