Forums - Sony - PS5 and PS Portal Price Increase Confirmed [Update]

I work at Micromania in France, and I haven't been informed of a price increase for the PS5. It's strange, because we're always notified in advance of price changes so we're ready for the store opening.

People on ResetEra are saying at least 1 of the 2 profiles involved in the rumor is not reliable.

I guess we will know by tomorrow night if there are no price increases.

Friday's are usually reserved for bad news, so the day of the week makes sense. But the sources don't have the best track record. I'll wait until an official announcement before writing something up. Unless Jason Schreier confirms the rumors.

I honestly don't know why people are not asking Jason over there to say if he heard anything about it.

He answer a lot of people questions there.

I say that's a very good call to hold off on releasing any bait articles. IMO I don't see any reason to report this rumor until it is confirmed (unless its coming from a highly reputable source such as Jason from Bloomberg or NateTheHate2), especially when we'll find out the definitive answer as soon as tomorrow. All these fake stories do is create a wave of sensationalism and bolster the doom-and-gloom which plagues online discourse.

Anyhow, I'm not gonna jump to any conclusions. Best to keep a level head and wait for an official announcement from Sony. If they do end up pursuing this price hike, then yeah, there is no doubt that PS6 is releasing next Fall. This would almost certainly send PS5 sales figures back in line with PS4's in 2019. (It would also explain why Sony was going so crazy with discounts during Fall last year— maybe a contract renewal or something is forcing an increase in the cost of PS5 chips.)

I get that they're trying to mitigate price increases, but that doesn't mean they can just say "hey give us frozen pricing from 6 months ago on components".

Nobody has claimed or implied Sony is receiving component discounts, aside from benefiting from long term contract which will run out.
BraLoD´s citation of Sony CFO´s claimed strategy to ¨combat rising prices¨ (not clearly 100% nullifying) is by ¨monetizing the base¨,
i.e. increased revenue from elsewhere (PS Plus or otherwise) which implies subsidizing increased component cost...
Not Sony getting discounted components.

Sony securing enough cheap RAM for 1 or 2 more years doesn't guarantee MSRP remaining the same, as they may want to maximize hardware profits in the short term to offset RAM related losses in the medium term. NAND prices are also shooting up which further complicates things.

Luckily for Sony, they have a huge established playerbase, so not selling a lot hardware for the next 3 years might not have a significant impact on their business. New generations are no longer a "hard reset".

Still, I wasn't expecting them to increase hardware prices anytime before 2027. Hopefully the report is bullshit.

I don`t really think they're crazy enough to do this. I mean, the launch model was a mere 400 Euros...

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

everything is getting more expensive. it's ridiculous to think consoles wouldn't either

Well they already have which is why this is especially bad

Relative to historic practices these have been amongst some of the most profitable consoles in history, I don't see these price hikes as inevitable. The console makers above a lot of other businesses are able to ride this out.

I sure as hell hope that this is not true because it's very damaging to the future of console gaming, I'd rather they rise prices elsewhere then make the entry point for console gaming even more inaccessible. At least with services/software etc you can be more selective and reign in your spending. For a hardware purchase though there is only one way to go about that.
