I own a CRT for games made prior to the HD, FHD and UHD eras... Ergo... I am a retro gamer.

2006 is considered retro now?! Well, 2006 is closer to 1987 than it is to 2026...
Yeah, I still play games from that era - not very often, but I might boot up an old DS, Game Boy, PS1 game..
I still have a CRT TV in a spare room, and I've been meaning to hook it up at some point for a more authentic retro experience.
Kinda...I'm not really focused on it, but I still do have CRT hooked up - though it's CRT from 00s, which I think is too good for that authentic 80s feel.
I do emulate a lot, and with both that and any modern pixel art game I play, if it doesn't have some CRT shader in game, I use ShaderGlass over it to simulate CRT.

There are good emulators out there. I'm a fan of the Mister and Analogue clones. There's definitely bad emulators out there though. And people who play older games in 16:9 are barbarians lol. |
Retroarch is absolutely amazing. The one that has limited offerings is N64 Recompile. The texture packages can be game changing. Plus if offers high fps mode. Majora's Mask is stunning with the HD texture pack. Star Fox 64 plays at 120 fps. Despite the upgrades, it plays as intended. I couldn't be a bigger fan of emulation.
Dreamcast works great as well. Skies upscaled to 4k is fantastic. Still looks quite lovely.

Lol, no. Vastly changing the graphics of the game is not "playing as intended".

Gameplay is identical, just better graphics. I mean is FF7 Remake a different game on my rtx 4090 compared to the Switch 2?
Edit
I would also argue that N64 games, as an example, were 360p and 20 fps because of technical limitations, not because the developers intended (e.g. wanted) the game to be as such.

The technical limitations are part of what makes the games what they are, though. It's fine if you want to use upgraded textures, but it's not the same game anymore. It's an unofficial remaster. If that's what you want to do for fun, that's fine. Just saying.
Kinda. I still have my old Atari 130XE, plus all my old Nintendo systems. But for the pre-NES stuff that doesn't have things like Atari 50 to play on modern hardware, like Atari 8-bit, Bally Astrocade, TRS-80, etc, I emulate those.
I also don't have a CRT. I'm not that wedded to the 1980s experience to where I want to lug around heavy tube TVs. The hell with that.

CRT or good CRT emulation via shaders is fairly important for 8/16-bit home console era, though. Not that one must play it that way, but modern panels are really terrible for displaying that old content and make old 2D pixel art much uglier.

For retro consoles I use 2 CRTs. They are Flat screen CRTs. Sony Trinitron. Some free Daewoo inch one. Works well.
