The biggest flaw with BotW and TotK, I loved them both, is the battle system. I mean it is kind of trash.

Edit

My dream is BotW exploration, Elden combat and Skyward's dungeons...

Wait a couple of years, then play Where Winds Meet :)

As I said, open world is not a genre, and TotK/ER are not even in the same genre. Just like you can't compare BotW and Morrowind arbitrarily, even though are both open world games.

Yes, you can.

You're overthinking this; games don't have to be highly similar to compare them, every year we do a GOTY award where games from totally different genres are compared to see which is best.

No, you can't really - that's why I said OP needs to be more specific about particular aspects (exploration, risk/reward, world design, combat, narrative progression, character progression and other that they share, along with many they that they don't).

But I don't think you and I will agree on this one, so let's move on.

I strongly dislike the Souls genre so TOTK wins by default, though it's also just a great game in its own right with insanely impressive technology and depth of gameplay, a huge amount of content, and a ton of charm.

Why?  Just curious, not sparking a debate.  My 2 cents, the games are not that hard, just counter intuitive.  Like blocking is a waste of time, getting distance between a boss and the character is a waste of time, etc.  Once you figure out the games just play different, they really aren't that hard.  I always thought the difficulty was grossly exaggerated.  I can easily solo all those games through NG+4 and comparative to NES hard, the games are super easy, though still harder than many modern games.  But Souls, in terms of difficulty, have nothing on Zelda II, Ghosts + Goblins, Contra, etc.

It's just not my cup of tea, I have poor reflexes and hand-eye coordination so I'm no good at hard games, and I get easily frustrated which to me is one of the worst feelings imaginable.

Also, I deal with an insane amount of stress in my daily life, and I game to unwind and relax, so i prefer to play easier games.

Fair enough.  I can see that point.  Thanks man, I was genuinely curious.

Totk is one of few games I consider deserving of its hype. Flawed to be sure, several dubious design decisions, but it's just that fun and unique. Probably my third favorite game of the 2020s after Black Mesa and FF7 Remake.

I despise the Souls genre to picking ToTK even tho I fell off it fast. That was less to do with the games quality and more I got everything I wanted out of that formula with BoTW.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

TotK for me.

I still can't get myself to play Elden Ring. I bought it at release, my oldest played it, saw some of it while he was playing and it did not draw me in. I have completed Dark Souls multiple times, then Dark Souls 2 and then I got bored of the souls genre. Elden ring didn't look interesting enough to abandon VR for, which I did for TotK.

TotK just kept on giving, near perfect open world sandbox game. (I say near since its memory is rather short)

Yeah it's up there for me too; about the only other 2020s titles can match/exceed it for me would be Doom Eternal, Monster Hunter Rise, Turbo Overkill and RE Requiem.
