So if it is not skill, why does rol beat us in our races all the time?

Rol,
I kind of took from the review that he considered the "big step back" to be the loss of the "snaking" turbo boost as now "anyone can turbo because it's just a powerslide". He did mention the rubberband AI as a problem, but I took from the review that he didn't think that was as big a deal as the loss of snaking.
I'm off to gamestop in about 30 minutes to pre-order it. So there.
I fully agree that driving skill comes first, always. I suspect no amount of luck will allow a mediocre player to consistently beat an excellent player in MK:Wii. If that is indeed the case, then why the bitchin' by all the reviewers?
@ RolStoppable I made a mistake, i usualy dont listen to reviews on what they say about any game . I only look up the reviews to see what they think and see what score they give them. I just got caught up in the excitement for this game. This hardly happens to me esp on forums.

The review was well made as always, but they completely ignored some important aspects of the game. They didn't mention the ability to completely skip the Friend Code registration part by sending invitations to people on your Wii Address Book, or that you can change the frecuency of items. And obviously now that 'snaking' is removed more people have a chance at actually racing and not just drfiting left and right (Albeit I know how to do it, and do it often when I play on Mario Kart DS). But it all comes down to balance things out and removing the snaking was a very smart move.
Also, they completely ignored the mention of the Mario Kart Channel it comes with... well I guess not completely they did mention the stat tracking somewhat. But I guess time os short on reviews? Nevertheless it was a good review.

I don't see any real issue with making the game accessible. Quite frankly, people complaining that "veteran players are on the same level as novices now" just smacks of elitist mentality. It's a video game. The point isn't to make your opponents scream in rage and want to kill you because you're better at it than they are, the point is to have fun. And if the only way you can have fun is by irritating, belittling, and otherwise dominating other players, why exactly are you playing Mario Kart? The series was always intended to be a family-friendly racing genre. F-Zero is the series to turn to if you want skill-over-fun gameplay.
Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

I think the complaint about "loss of snaking" goes hand in hand with the complaint of "the game is more of an even playing field now for everyone". It just sounds like someone is pissed that he can't easily win races anymore because a technique not everyone knows how to do, has been removed. Thus winning cheap by beating non-snakers with snaking isn't possible anymore. Now that I think of it, the removing of snaking also leads to the complaint about 150cc. Because the reviewer can't snake anymore in this game and he isn't a skilled driver, GP mode becomes dependent on luck in his eyes. It's very probable that the reason why some people are upset that snaking was removed, is that they just aren't really good in Mario Kart without it. On the other hand, gamers who prefer actual racing over constantly drifting left and right, welcome the removal of snaking. |
It's the same thing as the people who complained when they found out wavedashing wouldn't be in Brawl. Some people like to use every exploit they can to their advantage. Take away the exploit and they don't have that advantage anymore. Then they claim the game's "catering to casuals" just because they don't have their tricks to rely on.
Meh, it's Mario Kart :/ I'm honestly not sure what you guys are looking for in a review. My friends and I used to play MK64 and I'll tell you one thing it was NEVER about, RACING. It was always about finding shortcuts, snaking, and blasting the crap out of my friend with whatever I happened to have (which would suck because he'd fall back in position and get obviously better items than me xD ). 8.4 seems like a good score, besides it's game trailers, these are the guys that couldn't melee in Uncharted, y'know, mash the square button?
From 0 to KICKASS in .stupid seconds.
so it's basically a game for n00bs.. :P.. but I'm more upset about how they managed to ruin the local multiplatform, it's fun to go online, but it's the offline multiplatform that me and my mates have been playing for years now, it wasn't necessary to screw it up like this..
