Rol,

I kind of took from the review that he considered the "big step back" to be the loss of the "snaking" turbo boost as now "anyone can turbo because it's just a powerslide". He did mention the rubberband AI as a problem, but I took from the review that he didn't think that was as big a deal as the loss of snaking.

I'm off to gamestop in about 30 minutes to pre-order it. So there.

I fully agree that driving skill comes first, always. I suspect no amount of luck will allow a mediocre player to consistently beat an excellent player in MK:Wii. If that is indeed the case, then why the bitchin' by all the reviewers?

I think the complaint about "loss of snaking" goes hand in hand with the complaint of "the game is more of an even playing field now for everyone". It just sounds like someone is pissed that he can't easily win races anymore because a technique not everyone knows how to do, has been removed. Thus winning cheap by beating non-snakers with snaking isn't possible anymore.

Now that I think of it, the removing of snaking also leads to the complaint about 150cc. Because the reviewer can't snake anymore in this game and he isn't a skilled driver, GP mode becomes dependent on luck in his eyes. It's very probable that the reason why some people are upset that snaking was removed, is that they just aren't really good in Mario Kart without it.

On the other hand, gamers who prefer actual racing over constantly drifting left and right, welcome the removal of snaking.

It's the same thing as the people who complained when they found out wavedashing wouldn't be in Brawl. Some people like to use every exploit they can to their advantage. Take away the exploit and they don't have that advantage anymore. Then they claim the game's "catering to casuals" just because they don't have their tricks to rely on.
