Forums - Sony - Sony is shutting down Bluepoint Games

Tagged games:

Sony went all in on the western whale audience, orienting their games, service models and even moving their headquarters to the west.

Perhaps it irritated Sony that their flagship device's only significant exclusive is a launch day remake of a Japanese action RPG.

Bluepoint was a constant reminder of their own failures.

This kind of nonsense gives me a headache...

Why would they be "irritated" over choices of their own making (porting most stuff to PC)? And Demon's Souls Remake isn't more significant than Astro Bot or Ghost of Yotei.

While my post is trolling more or less, I do think there's some merrit to it.

Wouldn't you be irritated that the money making plans you drew up all failed but the identity you're distancing yourself from is seen as the triumph of the current generation?

Yotei released last year.  Late last year.  I'm sure its impressive but 5 years after launch? Better late than never I suppose. I won't even get into the negative PR the game's lead actress drew to the title.

Are we really claiming a tech demo platformer is more significant than a game that inspired a genre?  There was even speculation that Sony intentionally overshadowed it with Concord by releasing it a week earlier.

I'd be irritated that my projects failed. But Demon's Souls has got nothing to do with it lol.

Sony released several games that sold and reviewed well on PS5 before getting ported to PC later. Yotei may be a continuation to this.

The original Demon's Souls takes credit for inspiring a genre. Not the Bluepoint Remake.

Astro Bot is not a tech demo. Is this more of your trolling or are you conflating 2024's GOTY with Astro's Playroom?

The most significant games on the PS5 so far are 3rd party heavy hitters, and titles like Spider-Man, God of War, Gran Turismo, and Horizon. Demon's Soul Remake is tiny compared to these. Sony doesn't care that you have access to their games on PC as long as you give them your money. Playstation is a bigger business than ever and you're out here acting like the brand just died, and that PC support is being forced against their will.

They closed Bluepoint because they surmised that the studio doesn't have the talent to make great new games, and that the only remake left that is capable of selling 5 million+ would be for a game that FromSoftware and Miyazaki don't want anyone to touch.

The clowns at Sony should've never purchased Bluepoint in the first place. Their whole acquisition game post Insomniac has been an utter embarrassment.

You're right about the trolling. But you ain't right about this. Housemarquee and Nixxes are fantastic gets (arguably more so than Bluepoint).

FireSprite, Valkyrie, Haven and Bungie are all still TBD (though Bungie's price was inflated).

Shame about Bluepoint and Firewalk.

I can just grant most of what youre saying but a lot of it is bad faith.  Playstation is bigger than ever but not more profitable.  Sony not caring is one way to look at it.  The reality is they need PC because of declining profit margins, but I digress.

The remake is likely just as important as the original as I'd wager and win that more people heard about and played the remake than the original.  And yeah, legacy IP doing better than a Souls game isn't impressive - sales were never in question.

I'm referring to legacy here.  Are you really going to tell a layman "get a PS5 for Astrobot its like Mario" or "get a PS5 for Demons Souls its like Elden Ring"? PS5 is in a lot of hands and games are selling well, dont get me wrong, but it's legacy is no better than the Seres S/X.  Outside hardcore Sony fans most people I talk to can't name or care about PS5 exclusives.

Astro Bot likely already outsold DeS Remake. And again, og Demon's Souls started the genre (and Dark Souls was what truly popularized it). Demon's Souls Remake is barely more significant than Shadow of the Colossus Remake, most Elden Ring fans don't give a damn about it.

Playstation is more profitable than ever. Their PC income is tiny and decreasing. The entire PC program is probably more damaging than beneficial, apparently they're dialing back on it as far as AAA singleplayer games because they seem to have realized that the loud minority going around screaming "no games" could snowball into disaster.

Sony porting their games to PC doesn't break their IP's association with Playstation. It just hurts it a little. The vast majority of players buy Spider-Man, God of War, Horizon, TLoU on Playstation. Not PC.

You sure?  According to an article I read PC is 1/3 of their software revenue and growing.  It generated over $600,000,000 in revenue.

And the whole dialing back is a rumor, not confirmed.  At the end of the day Sony can do whatever they want, but they will be missing out on millions upon millions of dollars.  Sony releasing games a year or two after ps5 doesn't hurt their sales, it helps their bottom line.

PC sales now account for nearly a third of Sony's first-party game revenue | TechSpot

edit

Also found this via Gamespot:

"In total, the report said Sony's five top-selling PC releases on Steam have passed 43 million copies sold collectively. The gross revenue from these sales reportedly amounted to $1.5 billion. This includes $1.2 billion for Sony and Valve's cut of $350 million or more. Valve takes a 30% cut of PC game sales on Steam, falling to 25% after $10 million in revenue and $20% after 50 million."

Sony dropping PC support and assuming PC gamers are going to buy a ps5 is foolish and stupid.  Perhaps they do it, but I think people are buying too much into rumors.

“Consoles are great… if you like paying extra for features PCs had in 2005.”

Playstation 5 gave Sony more money in half a generation than all 4 full generations before and someone is trying to argue Playstation is not more profitable? It's literally beyond any dream Sony could have ever had.

Saying it carries the same level of legacy that XBS and needs PC.

And calling bad faith to a perfectly normal response to his absurdity no less.

Good ol' Nintendo profile pic post.

Hmm, I'd be weary of these estimations which is what they are. Lots of guess work here or reports Alinea Analytics being treated like confirmed numbers. For sure though Helldivers is a huge earner on PC and they'll continue to push all live service games to PC day one. Helldivers one also released during a relatively quiet year in regards to single player release so it will also present a more PC skewed revenue balance compared to sonys norm
