Forums - Sales - Is nintendo the winner of the 8th gen or the 9th gen?

Is the switch an 8th gen console

Yes its 8th gen 19 41.30%

Yes its 9th gen 27 58.70%

Total:46

For people saying we put Switch and Switch 2 in the same generation, if you look at the front page it says "Current" as those are the four consoles still in production and being sold.

I would say historical precedent can go both ways; there's precedent for instance for a "midway" console being seen as kicking off the next gen (Dreamcast) and being part of the current gen. (Colecovision)

Well yes there is context that you have to use when things dont line up as neatly as youd like them to. For dreamcast, it released in 1999 but is part of 6th gen because its harware is more comparable there. Colecovision was 1982 near the end of the 2nd generation but its hardware is more comparable to 2nd gen consoles.

The Wii U launched in 2012 with a hardware more comparable to 7th gen consoles, but not one disputes the Wii U being 8th gen. No one disputes the Wii being 7th gen.

There were people back in 2007 and 2008 saying that the wii was a 6th gen console because they couldnt cope with the fact that nintendo was going to win a generation and sony was going to lose one. Real stuff, that was actually happening. Regardless though, its not just about power, its about power and timing. Its not just one or the other. Also, a little common sense can help you figure a sensible grouping. So its not just one thing you use to determine it. People who say "wii u comes after wii and switch comes after wii u" to determine what generation its in are just taking a very simple minded approach to it. Its good to be simple, but you have to take a step back and take a macro view of things, look at the big picture, things like context, history, precedent, and stuff, and stuff and stuff.

Total Championships: Nintendo - 4, Sony - 2, Atari - 1, Microsoft - 0, Sega - 0

Thats my question. I also think itd be helpful to identify what generation mario is since its the biggest gaming franchise.

I highly disagree with this. There are clearly still generations that consoles fit into. What nintendo is doing at least at the moment is releasing their console of that generation halfway through. Thats all thats happening. Its much more sensible to say that than to say they aren't in any generation.

If it is why would you ask the question  'is nintendo the winner of the 8th gen or the 9th gen?

Because i want to know whats the consensus of which systems switch has beaten. So far nintendo has won generations 3, 4 7, and now either 8 or 9. Just keeping a tally of how many championships they have compared to sony.

Total Championships: Nintendo - 4, Sony - 2, Atari - 1, Microsoft - 0, Sega - 0

Gens are so confusing right now since console lifetimes interlap one another between companies so id suggest just to stick to measuring this in periods of time rather than gens to make it simple for everyone.

Which is why I used the Wii U as example, since it came out only one year before the other two, just like the ColecoVision came out only one year before the Famicom.

But taking a step back and taking a macro view of things... Yes, the console that replaced the Wii U with a completely different architecture and competed with PS5 for half a decade was a 9th gen console.
