The biggest thing hurting the Switch in my opinion is that especially during holidays Nintendo is seen as a child's toy and parents are probably more apprehension about throw down $500 for a toy for their children.

I think the split of those ~15% is like ~5% switch 1, and ~10% Series S/X. Also yeah.... I get the no tracking of the NEX playground. |
I agree it is more like 10% for Xbox Series and 5% for Switch 1 given that is the breakdown in the UK.
Xbox Series is ~30% more expensive than last year and there were no official hardware deals this year. I am not surprised there wasn't much of a boost. While the PS5 was heavily discounted.

With CoD underperforming and Xbox hardware being nowhere so far this holiday, the next MS Quarterly report will be interesting to say the least. |
Actual units sold will be even worse than the report suggests as Microsoft gives us how much hardware revenue is down rather than in units sold. Xbox Series is ~30% more expensive now than it was a year ago in the US and a bit less than that in other regions.

Got to be the first time in Xbox history they've not done Black Friday hardware deals. If that's not a sign that they're done with Xbox Series I don't know what is.
Given the huge success Sony gets from price cuts, its obvious that Nintendo will need to be more open with doing good price promotions this generation over the last. But i think the problem is that Sony can recoup promotions easier due to their huge digital sales ratio and enormous subscription revenue, as long as Nintendo mostly sell physical games at retail and have low subscription revenue, that will limit their ability to make good price promotions.

The tariffs hurt them more than the others as they produce 100% of Xbox Series in China in I believe which has a much higher tariff than anywhere else. At least some Switch 2s and PS5s are produced in Vietnam. Plus Microsoft is done with selling consoles at a significant loss or really any loss at all.
There was a report that Microsoft is looking to produce up to 4.8 million Xbox devices in Vietnam in the near future. Devices would also include accessories like controllers and headsets. If they are able to produce some Xbox Series consoles there it could mean the price of the console might come down in the US. Not to where it was before but at least to something more reasonable.

I think this black friday result along with the one in Europe speaks more about the playstation vs xbox situation as opposed to Nintendo doing less than anybody. With Xbox basically removing itself from the picture with very bare minimum discounts, and very low advertising vs playstation, the general consumer had a clear choice for the hardcore gaming market... and that was a $399 ps5 or a $449 ps5 with fortnight. VS a series S a way weaker console which was barely marketed at a similar or higher price than the ps5 digital. TBH that imo is the bigger story. This is a clear indication that Microsoft is focusing on selling more software vs hardware, as an example the series S was as cheap as $199 a couple years ago, and is currently $399 for the 2025 holiday season.
I will say,
Nintendo did drop the mario kart bundle to $449 at major retailers... I assume they did not expect playstation to see the sales it is seeing 5 years into the generation. But this is huge for Sony imo. And with GTA VI being the big game for the holiday season in 2026, they are going to sail past ps4 life time sales imo.

This seems latency obviously. The sales in Japan arr great where they are selling it for 30% cheaper than the rest of the world.
To be fair i don't really understand how its even possible for Sony to do big price promotions in the US this year, tariffs on countries in Asia are like 20-25 %, meaning Sony should be losing fairly big money on PS5 sales in the US at this price point. But maybe its a loss leader strategy at their part to lose money on hardware sales to get more people into the ecosystem. And they do have huge subscription revenue, huge third party sales, huge digital sales ratio and huge accessory sales, Nintendo has far fewer means to use that same loss leader strategy, because they have less avenues to recoup hardware losses.

I don't think that was Nintendo dropping the price of the Mario Kart World bundle to $449, but rather retailers. It started with Walmart dropping the price, followed by other retailers up to several hours later.
