Forums - Sony - So, I bought a PS5

I bought a used PS5, my first Playstation since the first one - if we don't count in the abomination that was the PS Mini.

To be honest, I bought it for my kids. a little "bribing" for something they don't have at their mother's and as Sony¨s shutting down the PSN on PS4 next year, I guess it's time to upgrade. But now I have a problem; what games to get? The kids who mainly play it are 15 and 11. To me the games I've been looking on online marketplaces don't look very interesting to me, but as I have Switch and PC with Steam account, it looks like PS5 don't have much purpose.

Impressions on PS5, this is 1TB (or 825GB) digital slim edition with BD-drive bought later. I paid 300€ for the system with one controller. Everything was in their original boxes. Once I got home, I put the BD-drive to it's place, which was made surprisingly easy and thought-out.

First thing was a 1,3GB update I had to load, after setting the screen brightness and such. Luckily I have 1Gb cable connection so it didn't take long. You also needed to register online the drive itself for the system, though it took only one click. The BD-drive was the next problem because it didn't read discs and I spent an hour testing different BDs and DVDs, until going to Sony's support site to notice I put the disc the upside down. Once the disc was the right way, everything worked - so back to the box to wait the kids.

It seems it takes way too long to my taste for the PS5 to start and close. What I liked about the GUI was, that it didn't have all the bullshit and when you put a disc in it you could start playing the disc with a click. Although, I didn't have a PSN account to log into, which may change what you see when starting the system.

Games recommendations for the kids are welcome, preferrably those you can find on disc.

Here are some game recommendations for kids: Astro Bot, SpiderMan 1/2/Miles Morales, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

Worth noting is that Astro Bot is actually the most critically acclaimed game Sony has ever published (according to OpenCritic). It won Game of the Year last year. Cannot recommend it enough!!

What kind of games do your kids like? Let them start with Astro's Playroom (included for free), if they enjoy it, get AstroBot and consider Rift Apart and Sackboy.

Yay, me too! Mine arrived today and as the Ghost of Yotei Edition, it came with the game. Based on Ghost of Tsushima, it would probably be a good recommendation... but definitely not for kids!

Obviously I don't have enough experience with the console to recommend anything based on personal experience, but the suggestions above seem pretty solid.

And that's why I keep mine horizontally, no confusion about how to put in the discs :p

Starting with a PSN account just puts some more info under the game bar, widget nonsense / dashboard you can customize or ignore.

And to add to the Astrobot hype train, essential!

15 and 11, Spiderman games are probably the most interesting to them.

As somebody with a niece who is 11yo, I can testify to SpiderMan. (And he also reaaally loves Astro Bot. Literally anytime he visits, he’ll instantly have me boot up Astro on the PS5 lol.)

Agreed.

Astro's Playroom and Astro Bot are PS5-exclusive and likely will be for years still.

Start with Astro's Playroom since it's free and then get Astro Bot.

There are some PS4 and PS5 games to play on PS5 that aren't on PC, and some aren't on non-PlayStation consoles.

I would recommend Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. It's a PS4 remaster of PS3 games.
