Forums - Gaming - Valve New Hardware Launching Early 2026 - Steam Machine, Steam Frame, Steam Controller

I'd rather get a Steam Deck or Gaming PC.
This seems too similar to a PS5 to me, and it's not like I have a huge Steam library.

Pretty cool announcements. Valve's attempts at hardware weren't ideal at first but they've gotten a lot better at it so it was about time for these three to get new versions. I have no need for a Steam Machine but might get the controller at some point and could make the Steam Frame my first experience with VR.

For the former its specs seem disappointing though if a bigger beefed up version comes out in a couple years or so then it could work really well as a budget option if the price is right. It could be a good way for someone who currently only plays really easy to run games like Fortnite on a basic laptop to upgrade to something with a lot more power without needing to spend a lot. There will be lots of kids out there whose only experience with PC gaming so far is that for example.

RDNA3 on the GabeCube is already outdated with no good FSR4 support yet.

ARM snapdragon on the goggles is very interesting. I wonder if it is supposed to run games natively on there? Maybe some 3D Android apps?

Looking at my SilverStone SG13B...

This is a good set of hardware, good for people who want to enter the PC gaming space for the first time.

I cant see myself getting any of these (because I go for higher specs hardware) but its great PC gaming is expanding with more options to utilize Steam and other stores.

Steam has the most number of games of any platform in the world and its constantly growing alongside the multiple generations of games thats on it.

The Steam Machine looks nice and seems like an ideal hardware for people who want to get into PC gaming - 16 GB RAM with 8 GB vRAM.

However that puts it in a mid tier rank PC these days since the go to for higher tier gaming computers is 32 GB RAM with 16 GB vRAM - for my self I'm currently running a rig that has 32 GB RAM with 12 GB vRAM but its a computer from last year with 1-2 year old hardware inside. Planning to replace it in 2029.

The Steam Frame seems interesting considering you dont need a separate computer to run the games but again I rather play it on my 85'' TV (and future 98'' TV).

The Steam controller looks...garbage, sorry - but I'll stick to my 8bitdo wireless ultimate 2 controller which imo is the best controller - even better than the first party controllers like the Switch 2 pro controller, Dualsense or the Xbox Series controllers.

Here’s to hoping this could be sold in major retailers. Otherwise, I just don’t see an audience such a device.

If you’ve got Steam set up on your PC, why purchase a weaker version of your PC? And if you don’t have a PC, then chances are you don’t have Steam… so you either (i) won’t know about this device, or (ii) would be better off purchasing a more powerful PS5 unless priced competitively.

Only audience I could see is those looking to enter the Steam ecosystem but not wanting a PC.

Your second paragraph/thrid sentence pretty much nails the answer for the first couple of sentences.

Nobody already deep into PC gaming will get this because by the time this comes out in 2026 - even now the hardware that is available already overshadows these products and the most you can get out of PC gaming is from Desktops. Even my 1 year old gaming PC has better specs.

This is a good entry point for users who dont have a gaming PC but want to get into PC gaming without having to deal with paying over a thousand dollars or want a imitation of a gaming console - and because of that it wont be sold in major retailers because its going to be a niche product, having it mass produced and picking up dust isnt the way, they'll be making units based on demand like with the Steam Deck.

This is to expand the Steam ecosystem, basically what Microsoft wants to do with the Xbox ecosystem.

Valve doesnt need to do this but with all the money they have, they can burn several millions of dollars on R&D to make quirky products like this. Its nice to have options like this even if I am not the primary audience.

Can I pair an Xbox controller with it?

So lets assume this like ~25% weaker than the PS5 gpu in terms of gpu compute... and has less ram, slower ram, less memory bandwidth.
It has a more powerful CPU.

So its going to run games at lower resolutions / texture quality, than a PS5, but perphaps at higher FPS (at lower settings/resolutions).

If it can stay under or equal to the price of a PS5... do you guys think there is a market for it?
(ei. a 1080p machine for most things).

*edit:
I wish they would have gone with a AMD architecture that could run FSR4.

I would assume so.
You can go keyboard and mouse, as well.

The point of the thing, is the streamlined experiance with fullscreen though,
where perphaps using valves own controller (with those track pads) make things easier.

Looking at that Steam controller makes my thumbs hurt. Analog Sticks looks worse than the Wii U pro controller. If the places were flipped maybe.

What do you guys think this will retail at?

449$ ? 499$ ? for the steam machine.... somewhere around there, surely they didn't break the bank on this design or Bill of materials for it.
