Forums - Movies & TV - Supporting performances that stole the show

Sometimes, an actor in a secondary role is just so damn good they outshine even the leads; what are some cases where, in your opinion, a supporting role stole the show in a movie or TV series?

Heath Ledger as the Joker

Christoph Waltz in Unglorious Basterds and Django U

Javi Bardem in No Coutry for Old Men

Pesci in Goodfellas

JK simmons in Whiplash

Pretty obvious and basic picks. All of them great tho. Just bringing them up to get them out of the way.

For TV series first thing that comes to mind is Dollhouse, Enver Gjokaj in particular though Fran Kranz & Olivia Williams were also supporting roles that outshined the lead.

Would Sir Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs count? Doesn't have that much screen time, although is obviously crucial to the film and won the Oscar for best actor (that said, Jodie Foster also won best actress).

My go to for this is Louis Gossett Jr. as Sgt. Emil Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman (won an Oscar for the role)

Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Hard to believe nowadays, but he was only supposed to be a small side character in a love story between Will and Elisabeth, but totally stole the show, and the movie franchise with it!

Also R. Lee Ermey as Gunnery Sargent Hartmann in Full Metal Jacket. How didn't you come with his name, maggots?!

Robin Williams in just about everything he appeared in, but especially in Aladdin.
