Maybe I'm just being too optimistic, but I still don't think Metroid Prime 4 is in trouble. Despite the rating being lower than the original trilogy, it still has an 81 average on Metacritic so far, which is a good rating. I look forward to playing this game as soon as I can. I'm currently playing Super Mario Galaxy 2.

I think the most important thing is that it actually looks amazing in all the reviews/gameplay snippets. The open world is the only real nag... the NPC stuff is actually extremely typical fair. I've got my fingers crossed for a solid openning and 3-4m LT

I hope the holiday window helps it but it can go the other way, with it being overshadowed by all the other Q4 releases. A February release could of potential lent more eyes on it

I don't think so. It'll probably be the best selling metroid game.

Unless it has very good legs looks like it's not gone how I thought it would.

I don't think we got any numbers meaning neither the switch 1 or switch 2 version shipped over 1m units.

Edit:

"Packaged versions of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition software are included in Nintendo Switch 2 software sales units, and downloadable versions are included in Nintendo Switch software sales units."

All digital sales of MP4 are counted as sales of the Switch 1 version, so Switch 1 Physical+Digital and Switch 2 Digital combined are under 1m units?

Nintendo seems to be counting Digital Switch 2 Edition sales as a sale of the Switch 1 game for some godforsaken reason.

That would mean Switch 1 Physical+Digital and Switch 2 Digital combined are under 1m units?

I don't think this is any cause for concern. This is essentially 3 weeks of sales and on an early yet quickly growing userbase. I wouldn't of expected it to be past 1.5m at the moment across both SKUs.

Considering Switch 2 is the more popular version (75-80% based on UK/Japan) and all of those digital sales are being attributed to S1, it may actually be passed 1m on the platform (S2) or at least very close to.

The concern is that Metroid games have poor legs and with how reception and word of mouth of this one has gone I really doubt that'll be much different here. The early userbase part doesn't help that much when there's a Switch 1 version unless there's a lot of people holding out till they get a Switch 2 but the Metroid fanbase being relatively hardcore for a Nintendo one means they've probably already largely gotten Switch 2's for it. Some of the ones that haven't will not bother buying it now due to the reception and word of mouth so the final total could be only around 2m in the end which is not ideal for such a long and troubled development cycle.

According to a journalist who has interviewed retro studios in the past, MP4 had a budget of around $100 million.

It looks like it will be difficult for the game to break even.

Considering it was in development for over 8 years and restarted from scratch, not surprising a lot of money was spent getting to the finish line. Unfortunately Metroid hasn't had that big moment a lot of other Nintendo IPs did on Switch where sales exploded.

How disappointing. Across a combined console base of at least 172 million, you would think that MP4 would have at least reached a million units within its first month. The Metroid franchise is very front-loaded in sales. Took Dread reaching 3 million sales TOTAL to become the best-selling game in the franchise.

This would explain why the game is already getting steep discounts, which is very unlike Nintendo.

Here's to hoping players are holding out on buying the game till they get a Switch 2.

Not combined, but individually did not reach 1mil… as far as I understand.

Purchases of digital Switch 2 Edition on Eshop count as a Switch 1 sale. (Because it is just a bundle of the Switch 1 digital game and upgrade pack)

So only Switch 2 Edition Physical is separate.

So Switch 1 Physical + Switch 1 Digital + Switch 2 Edition Digital combined is less than 1m.

And Switch 2 physical is counted separately and is also under 1m.

All combined could (should) be over 1m.

It really is a shame. Dread had a lot going for it and it still barely beat Prime 1 and Metroid 1 so I thought the 4-5m predictions I was often seeing for Prime 4 were quite optimistic but man I thought it would've outsold Dread at least but then stuff like the early previews came in. 3m really does seem to the ceiling for Metroid and I dunno how they're gonna break through that ceiling since it's very possible the next 2D one sells somewhat less than Dread even if it's great.

It's basically guaranteed to have sold over 1m. It didn't show up cause it didn't break 1m individually on Switch 1 or 2 and since digital sales on Switch 2 were counted as Switch 1 sales I expect it to be around 1.5m currently.

Yes, correct. We’re on the same page. Seeing that MP4B had sold 3:1 (NS2:NS1) at retail across many markets, I guess it shouldn't come as much of a surprise neither hit 1mil— it’s likely an even 50:50 split when comparing NS2 physical against the three NS1 releases.
