According to a journalist who has interviewed retro studios in the past, MP4 had a budget of around $100 million. It looks like it will be difficult for the game to break even.
Considering it was in development for over 8 years and restarted from scratch, not surprising a lot of money was spent getting to the finish line. Unfortunately Metroid hasn't had that big moment a lot of other Nintendo IPs did on Switch where sales exploded. |
It really is a shame. Dread had a lot going for it and it still barely beat Prime 1 and Metroid 1 so I thought the 4-5m predictions I was often seeing for Prime 4 were quite optimistic but man I thought it would've outsold Dread at least but then stuff like the early previews came in. 3m really does seem to the ceiling for Metroid and I dunno how they're gonna break through that ceiling since it's very possible the next 2D one sells somewhat less than Dread even if it's great.

The Metroid franchise is very front-loaded in sales. Took Dread reaching 3 million sales TOTAL to become the best-selling game in the franchise. Here's to hoping players are holding out on buying the game till they get a Switch 2. |
It's basically guaranteed to have sold over 1m. It didn't show up cause it didn't break 1m individually on Switch 1 or 2 and since digital sales on Switch 2 were counted as Switch 1 sales I expect it to be around 1.5m currently.
