I miss the days when a new Mario game meant doing something we've never experienced before.

What games are you thinking of? Only ones that fit that criteria in my mind are Super Mario Bros (NES) and Super Mario 64. SMGalaxy and SMOdyssey could also fit that criteria: the former introduced 360 degree platforming with orchestra scoring, the latter gave birth to an entire subgenre of platformers (“Stylized Platformers”).

The first three games all did things we'd never experienced before. Especially the first and third. 64 was another, and then Sunshine with FlUDD. I suppose Wonder might classify, but it's a 50/50.

I guess what I meant to say is I don't like the idea of sub-sequels. Like Galaxy 2, or Odyssey 2 etc.

But that's just me. As someone on this site put it: I am an island person, not an ocean person.

Nah. I don't think Nintendo will risk get players fed up of the Galaxy games. We're already getting Galaxy 1 + 2, a Galaxy movie. By the time the movie is out of theaters, I think people will want new things, no more Galaxy stuff

you say this, but they followed a similar formula for DK: (i) DKCReturns HD in January, (ii) DK Country Amusement Park in May, and (iii) DKBananza in July.

This case is different. I was not talking about the Mario franchise as a whole, as in your example with Donkey Kong. I was talking about the Mario Galaxy content.

I mean why?
Just do what they do now, release same game with almost 0 improvements, price it as much as you can and call the day.
There is no reason for Nintendo to release SMG3

I'd say Mario games tend to be very innovative in general. The exception was during the DS-Wii-3DS-Wii U era with the New Super Mario games. I'd give Galaxy 2 a pass, because it was an exception, the first sequel of a 3D Mario game. To me, 3D World is more lackluster than a Galaxy 2, as it is just Super Mario 3D Land (which was innovative, let's give credit to it) but in a home console.

As for Mario Wonder, what did it need to be to not be a 50/50 in your innovation criteria?

Ah, I see what you’re saying. So… SMB1+3, Yoshi’s Island, SM64, SMSunshine, SMGalaxy, (maybe?) SM3DLand, SMOdyssey, and SMBWonder. Also, if you want that “newness” in a Mario Team platformer, DKBananza released two months ago. Good time to check that out!

No no, we’re on the same page. (i) SMGalaxy 1+2 in October 2025, (ii) SMGalaxy Movie in April 2026, (iii) SMGalaxy new entry…?

For me, Wonder was the first 2D Mario I've played since SMB3 way back in the day where I was going, wow... this is really fresh! So for me, it fits. But I can see why some might find it too similar to the NSMB franchise and thus, roll their eyes. That's why I said 50/50.

Increases chances but I dont see it happening sadly.

Your Donkey Kong example: (i) A 2D platform game, (ii) an amusement park and (iii) 3D plataform game with a whole bunch of new ideas for the franchise

My example: (i) Galaxy 1+2, (ii) a movie about the Mario Galaxy games and (iii) Galaxy 3

In the Donkey Kong situation, we had the same franchise but more variety between each installment. In my examples, everything is Mario Galaxy

That was first time I had played a Mario title and felt like it was fresh since SM64, which was almost thirty years. But when I was a kid, I got three of them in the span of five years. That is what I miss. When games, not just Mario, were redefining and reshaping what we thought gaming could be... constantly.
