What games are you thinking of? Only ones that fit that criteria in my mind are Super Mario Bros (NES) and Super Mario 64. SMGalaxy and SMOdyssey could also fit that criteria: the former introduced 360 degree platforming with orchestra scoring, the latter gave birth to an entire subgenre of platformers (“Stylized Platformersâ€Â).

The first three games all did things we'd never experienced before. Especially the first and third. 64 was another, and then Sunshine with FlUDD. I suppose Wonder might classify, but it's a 50/50.

I guess what I meant to say is I don't like the idea of sub-sequels. Like Galaxy 2, or Odyssey 2 etc.

But that's just me. As someone on this site put it: I am an island person, not an ocean person.

I'd say Mario games tend to be very innovative in general. The exception was during the DS-Wii-3DS-Wii U era with the New Super Mario games. I'd give Galaxy 2 a pass, because it was an exception, the first sequel of a 3D Mario game. To me, 3D World is more lackluster than a Galaxy 2, as it is just Super Mario 3D Land (which was innovative, let's give credit to it) but in a home console.

As for Mario Wonder, what did it need to be to not be a 50/50 in your innovation criteria?
