So, it turns out when Retro Studios restarted the development of Metroid Prime 4, it wasn't from scratch. They had to salvage the concepts Bandai Namco did when they were developing the game.

Just echoing what I mentioned in the article thread that Firebush posted but i do feel like there is some wishful extrapolation in aspects of the twitters guys deductions. I don't see how Namco's blueprint from 5 years back dictated the criticism that have been aimed at quality of the open world or puzzles. They also suggest the feedback is from changing tastes since BOTW..,

More than anything it feels like a game made by a team still developing, learning for the first time how to make a metroid game and thus not priotising game design in a way that would have identified its weakspots, but for sure they'll be all ears to criticism and way more experienced to deliver a more universally appreciated experience next time.

If they make a Prime 5, they should actually go back and study Prime 1, since that is still the standard by which all 3D Metroids are measured. That game is up there with the greatest 3D Nintendo games of all time. It's a masterpiece. Study it, study why it is, and you will do well.

I’d imagine that’s what they did when they remastered the game back in 2023. I say they should pull a BotW where they go back to the NES original (and maybe also Super Metroid) to re-examine how they approach making a 3D Metroid.

I think that would be a good idea, too. Study the essence and then re-imagine it for modern times.

Yeah I get that some people feel the game's not up to the same level as Prime 1-3 or that it's not as great as people hoped for after such a long wait, but I feel like people are really going overboard when they act like the game is some kind of disaster.

It has flaws, but it's not remotely a bad game.

Exactly how I feel about dark souls 2.  DS2 always got too much hate.  Weakest in the series but still good.

Sadly the internet is usually devoid of nuance; either a game is a 10/10 best thing ever, or it's literal trash, worst game ever, blah blah blah.

As a result, games that are good but not quite great often get way more hate and criticism than they deserve even if they're still an 8/10.

That's fair. From my understanding, most of the Metroid Prime 4 team are new to Retro Studios, so maybe with Prime 5, they'll do even better.

It's a very good game but a strange Metroid game. Almost like the Hollywood Metroid. Maybe 15 years ago I would have hated it. Now just like, yeah it's different. It's less about isolation for the player but a group isolated somewhere alien. Now not so much horror elements as MP1 but neither did 3 and I fucking loved 3. But the very franchise it was inspired by was far less horror in 2 so whatever. It still has the moments of alone and the environment is deadly. It has enough Metroid still in it tho. Anyone claiming this is some giant mess is an idiot.

Finished it. Good game. People vastly overacting just because it's different. It's well made. My only gripe is a couple story moments. Could have been better but seen worse. Oh well. Had fun.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

This interview pretty much aligns with what some of us felt. Prime 4 feels like a high school group project. A good project overall, even great at times... But you can clearly see that it was done by multiple people with different degrees of polish, style and quality in their writting that never tried to make an homogeneous text.

I just hope Prime 5 is a thing and Retro can do something completely fresh without having to salvage whathever Bamco and Tanabe tried to do. In fact, I wish Tanabe stepped aside as Metroid Prime producer. He has too much control and influence, abd his ideas are pretty much hit or miss.

Finished it this morning.

Solid 8/10, three complaints

1) last boss fight is annoying because of stupid NPCs.

2) collecting green crystals is Ubisoft level of boredom.

3) Mac chimes in a bit too much.

The good
1) amazing gameplay especially with the new abilities

2) 120 fps is awesome

3) story and levels were well designed

4) good ending

Could you elaborate on these? I'm very curious about your reasoning xD

I thought the whole alien needing a savorior thing was better than repeating Ridley for the 7th time.  And I always enjoy a good cliff hanger.  I am not saying this was expedition 33 or anything, but for prime I was satisfied.  Feels like they are building something for 5.
