PS5 assembly in America isn't happening; the infrastructure just doesn't exist for it, and by the time you built it, the current administration wouldn't even be in power any more.

Tariffs aren't going to make companies pack it up and move everything to the US, they'll just pass the cost on to consumers like Sony is doing here.

I edited and added to my post but I will add it here too.

Except nvidia, apple, tmsc, j&j, merck have all claimed to be spending billions to bring jobs back.......  so...  I'm curious to see if it happens.  If those companies follow through and invest billions....  a bit more for a ps5 is MORE than worth.

But we shall see who actually delivers against their promise.

I hate trump as much as the next guy, but on paper some big investments from some of the world's biggest companies are coming are way.....

Companies will promise anything if they think it benefits them, like when they all promised to "go green" years ago but in fact just found ways to cheaply fake it.

They know the tariffs won't be permanent, they're not going to uproot their entire supply chain and rebuild it all again in a country where they have to pay workers like x5 as much.

Companies will always choose the path of most profit, and right now that is to raise their prices and wait it out.

That is my skepticism as well.  But to be fair nvidia, apple and tmsc....  I don't think they are playing.  Feels like, just maybe, they are investing.

But yeah, let us see.  Time will tell.

Trump admin will get token concessions from a handful of PR opportunities with companies like Apple and TSMC who are "making investments in America", but those will be for only a few products, the bulk of things that have been made in China or Vietnam or somewhere else, those companies are going to do the same as what Sony has done and what MS did with XBox and what Nintendo is doing with Switch 1 ... pass the cost increase onto consumers.

Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon, and several other retailers are already saying prices are going up. And even in Apple's case ... these companies are playing the long game. They can easily bail out of a promised factory production or some such in 3 years when Trump's days are numbered.

And even if a few token things are "made in Murica!" that just moves off the tariff cost off, it doesn't change the fact that production costs significantly more here (and cost of building those factories also has to be reimbursed too). Take a wild guess who's paying more for  that ... it isn't going to be the company. Either way, the consumer is the one most likely to get fucked.

I expect they'll make a show of it for appearances, maybe invest in some smaller stuff, but at the end of the day companies are driven by money, and they simply make more of it when they do their manufacturing where labour is cheap.

A factory worker in the US makes about $16 an hour, while in China they make $4. No companies is going to pay out x4 as much if they don't have to, it's easier to just absorb the tariff by making the customer pay more.

Also Apple "moved" US iPhone production to .... India ... not the US, lol.

That's the whole other problem too ... the world doesn't revolve around the US. If you're Sony you sell Playstations in Japan, Germany, UK, France, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, and like 50 other non-US markets.

You're not going to manufacture those Playstations anywhere but where its cheapest -- so they remain entrenched in China and Vietnam no matter what. They not selling a freaking PS5 made for 20-30% more in Milwaukee or some shit to consumers in Japan.

So what's going to happen is President 79-Years-Old will grow increasingly senile in the next 2-3 years, even if they built a token PR factory in the US, what you'll be left with is a factory where it's way more expensive to make Playstations than that factories they'll maintain in China and Vietnam for the rest of the world. So as soon as Trump is rendered politically useless (which could be as soon as the mid-term elections which are like 18 months out), first order of business for a lot of companies that even make these PR factories is going to be shift production back to the cheaper-to-produce factories in China and Vietnam and India and Mexico the first chance they get.

Probably.  But it would, on paper, be great if Apple, tsmc and nvidia do follow through.  Some big time money.

Edit

Point being, I think making firm conclusions on tariffs is silly, on both sides.  Until we know how it plays out in full, everyone is speculating mostly on political bias.

It's not "silly" to make conclusions on tariffs when we're already seeing $50-$100 more for a Playstation or XBox or Switch. Switch 2 is likely next.

Who exactly did you think was going to pay the tariffs? The tooth fairy? If people are this dumb in America then honestly they deserve to pay more for all their shit.

Sure, doesn't revolve around the US...  but according to VG, 37% of ps5 sales are NA.  Pretty damn big market.

The point is they can't and won't stop production in China and Vietnam for Playstations sold in the 100 other markets globally.

So all you're going to end up with even IF they made a special factory for the Trump term in the US would be a factory that is more expensive than their production from China and Vietnam. So the US consumer is instead of paying a tarrif, still paying the highest price due to production/factory costs.

And once Trump's term is over, you think they're going to keep running that US factory? No. They going to shut that shit down faster than you can say Taco and shift all PS6 production (in this hypothetical) 100% back to China and Vietnam where they can make it cheaper the first chance they get. Ain't no one in the US working a factory shift for 1/2 - 1/3 the pay they get working at a McDonalds and no one is willing to do 12-16 hour shifts, 6-7 days a week like they do in Asia either.

Nvidia revealed plans to manufacture AI supercomputers and chips in the U.S. for the first time. The company has commissioned more than 1 million square feet of factory space in Texas and Arizona. The new facilities will support Nvidia’s Blackwell chip production and supercomputer assembly, with partnerships including Foxconn and Wistron.

If Nvidia proceeds, which is an if, no I don't think they walk away in 3 years.  Same with Apple's reported $500,000,000,000 investment....  and TSMC, J&J, Merck, Eli, GE, Hyundai, Chobani, Honda.....  if they do invest trillions...  we will have to wait and see.  I am not ready to call tariffs a terrible idea if these investments happen.

Point being I think both sides are already making conclusions...  when the data hasn't even been remotely finalized.  My position is, I am curious to see how this plays out.

As for the part in bold, I personally support paying more for goods, if it means US jobs.  Fact is the US is a crossroad.  Cheap products + US jobs is a paradox, it doesn't exist.  We either will have US jobs + more expensive goods or foreign MFG and cheap products. I think the former is better for the country.
