Forums - Microsoft - Xbox announces partnership with AMD for "next generation Xbox consoles"

I would be very surprised if the next Xbox (if it actually releases that is) hits or gets close to 20M. Gen to Gen going from 86M down to 58M down to ~35M. We're probably looking at between 10 to 15M at the very most for this thing. Hell, Sega pulled the Dreamcast off the shelf when it was between 9-10M so it's entirely possible that this thing has a short lifespan on any shelf. No matter how much the most diehard enthusiasts don't want to believe it, Xbox is over from a mainstream hardware perspective.

Sega was bleeding lots of money at the time (mainly due to the arcade market, Sega's main cash cow, crashing into oblivion) and couldn't afford selling the Dreamcast anymore as it was sold at a loss. Sega would have needed to raise the price per console by over $100 to break even, which would have killed the console either way, so they simply pulled the plug while they still could.

Also, dropping sales each gen don't have to mean anything. Just look at NES > SNES > N64 > GameCube - but then came the Wii and beat them all. But I agree that the outlook ain't very good to say the least.

The problem here is Microsoft never was and never will be nearly as creative as Nintendo is to try the blue ocean strategy and make it work. No, Microsoft will never pull off a "Wii" to save the brand, you can quote me on that. As for Sega, they of course wanted to make the money back in software sales, but that wasn't working out for them either.

Normally, I'd say the crowd goes mild, but Xbox doesn't even have a crowd anymore.

30 million + isn't a crowd?

No it is not. 3 is a crowd.

Numbers is not your thing hey? 30+ millions is what for you?

Well this is what it is to MS: Microsoft reaches $4 trillion valuation after solid results | Reuters

Not enough to allow it to be competitive in the industry though and that's what actually matters.

So much nonsense...
It is not about being competitive with Sony/Nintendo anymore for Microsoft (and clearly, my comment is not about that), it is about being profitable, and if anything, you have no idea what the plan is for the next-gen hardware (other than believing very hard that they are not going to have any).

Even if it is 20m (which is probably much more), it is still a very large number of people to reach and this is assuming the next-gen hardware is not going to attract anyone (which again would be 100% random speculation)

The Xbox brand has collapsed and all this defending and denying isn't helping anyone. We all need (including you) to help those on Xbox move over to PC, PlayStation or Nintendo. That's what this is about now, not arguing the brand still has a future. MS other business sectors are far more profitable and I don't think they want anything to do with Xbox anymore.

Dude, you need to see someone. I don't know... Everything revolves around the "Xbox lost" issue with you; you seem to have some unusual fixations...

Xbox is doing more than well, and the numbers (results, FY 25Q4 up 10% YtoY) are showing it; it does not matter if it is from hardware, game studios, or GamePass. Nobody is "defending" it or "denying"; we are just discussing and holding different opinions about the future of Xbox and not everybody believe that having a plastic box with your logo on it is the only way to succeed. That's it. The strategy is not the same; they are probably not going to have a dedicated Xbox, but more of a PC able to run all Windows games, but in the end, they are still there and far from "collapsing".

Every comment from you is just a spiteful comment about Xbox or Xbox enthusiasts... Just get over your ridiculous console/brand/whatever war now.

I wasn't implying that Microsoft would come with something revolutionary like the Wii, just that sale trends may be reversed - if they play their cards right.

Nothing to do with spite, and you even admit yourself the next Xbox will be a PC that runs windows games. Well, if that's the case the Xbox players need to mover over to PC now then before more developers and retailers refuse to support it. They've already lost costco. This isn't about attacking or defending Xbox anymore it's about helping people transition over to other platforms.

I am genuinely curious at this point to see if we actually do get any future Xbox hardware or if the Series is the end of the road.

Microsoft may claim their next gen plans are still a go, but they also said in early 2024 that it was "just these four" games coming to PS/Nintendo, (Sea of Thieves, Grounded, Pentiment and Hifi Rush) and now 18 months later I can play Gears of War and Forza Horizon on my PS5.
