Sadly I think Diddy and Dixie are just there to join DK in Rambi races and run one of the shops seen in the Direct.

Seriously, the persons that treated Diddy and Dixie as gadgets and ditched the Kremlings at the previous games are on my "must kill" list.
That's why we need RARE back to make new 2D Donkey Kong games.

But I'm still confused as to how we have a young Pauline if this takes place AFTER the Donkey Kong arcade game in the 80s. Cranky even mentions the events of the first Donkey Kong Country, and he's supposed to be the first Donkey Kong as a bitter old man. |
I really think you’re putting too much thought into it, Cranky mentioning DKC is probably nothing more than a reference for longtime fans just like Cranky mentioning the original arcade game was also just a silly reference and both have little to nothing to do with an official timeline.

Eh, game studios aren’t static, people are constantly coming and going. Rare hasn’t worked on a DK game since the 90s, how many of the people who worked on them are still at Rare?

Modern Rare are a husk of their former selves and haven't made a good game in over twenty years.
Now Playtonic, where much of the talent behind the 90s DKC games now resides, them I'd trust with it; their last game, Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair, was superb.

Yeah, Playtonic is really good. Impossible Lair was amazing.
I would love to see a Donkey Kong game that relies in the SNES formula, that's why I said we need Rare back, but you're probably right.

Or at least a talented team of new blood to bring back the classic Donkey Kong Country gameplay.

As much as I love the DKC games, I must say I am excited as hell to see DK come home to Nintendo EPD and to see the franchise make a fresh comeback.
Turning over a new leaf takes nothing away from the games we already have, and sometimes a reinvention is exactly what's needed for a series to explode like never before.

It's a mixed bag. One day it gives you Donkey Kong Bananza or Breath of The Wild, next day it gives you Star Fox Zero.
