Forums - Microsoft - Best original Xbox game besides Halo 1/2, and why

Halo Combat Evolved and its sequel typically dominate the conversation of "best game on Xbox", and for good reason as they are stone cold classics.

If we set these two aside for the moment though, what do you think is the best game on the original Xbox besides them, and what makes it the best in your opinion?

Oh my god there are quite certified classics on the original Xbox. It’s my personal favorite of the Xbox consoles.

Jet Set Radio Future has to be my pick though! Sega came out swinging with support of the Xbox. From the skating, rebellious attitude, graffiti, soundtrack (omg the soundtrack!) and the classic cel-shaded graphics, JSRF has stood the test of time!

So many notable mentions though

Ninja Gaiden Black, Otogi, KOTOR, Fable The Lost Chapters, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Project Gotham Racing, Dead or Alive 3, Jade Empire, Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Unreal Championship, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, or Amped. So many fantastic games!

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

The first Splinter Cell was the reason I bought it. After that, RTCW was the Xbox Live killer app before Halo 2, and it was all I played for awhile. Then you had the best port of PSO. Pretty much any huge online game was better on that system, for obvious reasons.

There are lots of contenders. The original Xbox had a sneaky good library.

Halo: Combat Evolved is, in my mind, the best game on Xbox, but it's followed very closely behind by Half-Life 2. Amazing storytelling, immersive production design, first-rate graphics, game-changing physics, varied and rewarding gameplay, and a certain relentlessness that drives everything forward. Third place goes to Morrowind, the peak of The Elder Scrolls series and one of the finest open-world games ever made.

Ninja Gaiden Black and after that an Halo CE I can't think of anything else I'd describe as great.

I like Panzer Dragoon Orta.

Oddworld Stranger's Wrath is my favorite Xbox game (including Halo). Loved the setting, unique gameplay, and humour. Underrated.

Conker live and reloaded maybe, only because the xbox controller is like twenty times better than the N64 one.

Jade Empire is just about the only Xbox game from the first generation that I had any interest in playing. But I have not. Simply by being interesting on a console I only associate with genres I do not like, it can get my vote.

Morrowind, the scale and scope of that game outclasses anything that ever came out on consoles before it.

One of my favourites too! One the best in its genre in my opinion thanks to its slick action and stylish presentation.

My #1 would probably be Criterion's Black, for how it turns every shootout into a frenzy of destruction with its powerful weapons and destructible environments.

Star Wars Battlefront would be up there as well, spent countless hours on that one as a teen.
