Given the Switch 2's near imminent arrival, it still has solid sales. As for the PS5, well...

It will be interesting to see what will happen when Switch2 drops. Will the Lite become the bestseller of the gen1 family?

Reactions:

The Switch's last month to itself is somewhat better than expected so far though the PS5's return to over 10k was short lived. With nearly 20k Switch OLED's sold for this week I wonder why those people are only just now getting one instead of waiting a bit to get a Switch 2 for not much more.

Can anyone provide context into the popularity of GTA in Japan? Do we expect it to push PS5 hardware at all?

GTAV was big in JP, though not much bigger than most Nintendo exclusives. My expectation is that it’ll give PS5 about as much of a boost as Monster Hunter Wilds…maybe a little more. GTA is not as big in JP as in US/EU.

The boost must be something similar to a Final Fantasy game I think

Breakdown for GTA V

  • PS3: 880,877 retail + 2,519 digital
  • PS4: 774,453 retail + 115,749 digital
  • PS5: 1,551 retail
  • X360: 33,894 retail

Considering PC numbers it probably sold 1.9 to 2 million lifetime

However I don't think VI will come anywhere close to that on consoles. GTA V explosition in popularity seems to be because GTA online and multiplayer, japanese people seems to be more into the single player aspect of the game and after 15 years without a GTA single player I doubt the IP remains that relevant

Of course with all the buzz and hype even a western game can become a huge event in Japan... let's see

Maybe it will move 1 million units when combining PC and consoles and digital, so maybe 300-350k on retail on PS5

Maybe the reason is the OLED screen itself

May is the worst month for video game sales in Japan and it's the last month before the release of the Switch 2. Let's see how things go with the OG Switch
